For AmericanAirlines employee Cary Casas, work isn’t
just about sales and marketing. It’s also about giving
back to her community. As an account sales and de-
velopment manager in AA’s sales office inWashington,
D.C., Casas provides key corporate and travel-agency customers with support, service, and sales initia-
tives.Whennot atwork, she’sbusy taking careof her family or volunteering inher community.
“She isoneof our top salesmanagers, and she’s very passionateabout businessandour community,”
saysDebbieBehnke, Casas’s supervisor. “Shealwaysgoes theextramile.”
EachSeptember, Casas organizes abookdrivewithoneof her corporate accounts, the Inter-American
Development Bank. With its Youth and Community Development Office, Casas collects new and slightly
usedbookswritten inEnglishandSpanish, and thebankdelivers them toSpanish-speakingcommunities.
EveryNovember,Casasand thebankorganizea fooddriveanddeliverboxesof food to families inneed.
EachDecember, she “adopts” a class of underprivileged children at Cleveland Elementary School
innortheastWashington. “I e-mail their teacher,” explainsCasas, “who sendsme their Christmas
lists.”Casassends the lists to friendsandcoworkers, asking fordonations. Casascollects the toys,
making sureeach child receivesat least onewished-for gift, and shedelivers them to the class.
“Watching thekidsopen theirpresents is thegreatest reward,” saysCasas. “Weshouldhelpour
communitiesandchildrenwhoneedhelp. Not onlydoes thisgive themsomething to takehome for
Christmas, but it also teaches them thegift of giving. They learnhow toshareandhelpothers. I feel
privileged todo thiseach year. I couldn’t do itwithout the support ofmy colleaguesand friends.”
