Project Description

The Mongolia Mitigation Design Tool is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Shareholders Special Funds and part of a larger effort of capacity building within the Mongolia Ministry of Environment and Green Development (MEGD).

  • EBRD Project

The overall objective of the EBRD project is to build capacity within MEGD in regards to landscape-level conservation in the southern Gobi through assisting MEGD and other stakeholders in the identification, review, assessment, implementation and monitoring of mitigation and other conservation measures. Four main tasks were identified with this project: 1) Conduct a connectivity analysis; 2) Create a Mitigation Design Tool; 3) Assess alternatives and logistical constraints of regional traffic; 4) Provide training for a) performing connectivity analyses, b)using the Mitigation Design Tool, and c) assessing regional soil conditions in the mineralized zones of the Gobi Desert.

    Mitigation Design Tool

Specifically, the development of the Mitigation Design Tool will produced a collection of tools and documented procedures which can be used by companies and licensing authorities to avoid areas of high conservation value, measure potential impacts of development, and estimate offset costs for development as set by the Mongolian Offset Regulation. There are three main deliverables related to this task: 1) Development of GIS guidance document for following the Offset Regulations, 2) Development of desktop and internet tools to help limit potential conflicts and calculate offset costs for proposed development, and 3) Provide GIS training specific to following the Offset Regulation and using the tools developed.
