Flebus
end notes
Well, what did you think? Is Flebus a crazy strip, or what? Don't forget that this was done in 1957, the year that the "beat generation" broke into the public consciousness for the first time. Had closet beatniks infiltrated Terrytoons? Were they cynically mocking the self-serving ministrations of authority figures? For what it's worth, we say that Flebus is a heart-felt evocation of the Everyman, a character that embodies the desire to both do good and please authority-- a set of desires which is here shown to be contradictory if not irreconcilable. A sad (or at least "beat") statement on the character of authority. The boldly simple delineation and neo-fauvist color scheme are totally radical for 1957 and serve to complement and support the message of the piece. And how about that inking! If you have any thoughts on the matter, please feel free to share them with us.
