At our meeting at the Torque Club at RIR back in
March where Brittney Antozzi had been introduced
as one of the staffers there, our member Paul Lam-born
of Tech Painting informed me that she was his fiancée. Then, at
the Convention Center at our 10/10 meeting, when I noted the couple
at the table next to me and asked them when the wedding was
scheduled, they informed me that they were now man and wife. Did-n't
have time to get any further details, but will do so, and in the mean
time I wish the newly weds all the best! It's been some time since
we've had any weddings of Chapter members, and now with Justin
White's earlier in the year we've had two in 2017.
A week after our meeting, KOP Architects celebrated their 25th Anni-versary
with a party at the Hofheimer Building just west of Boulevard
on Broad St. Not a nice evening to be on the rooftop, so it was held
indoors on the 2nd floor, although I did slip up topside to check it out.
Not as fancy as the Kabana or Quirk's rooftop, but not bad, with a
German Biergarten motif, so I'll have to get up there on a night they
have some music and see it in action. Great to see KOP's Hal Down-ing
and wife Marilyn again. Hal had been our Newsletter Editor in '91,
'92, & '93, while also serving as our President in '92. Now he's mak-ing
noises like he's approaching retirement. Also present and making
similar noises is Sam Jennings, our President in '03-'04. He's current-ly
managing the project expanding the Engineering School at VCU,
and talking like it might be his last project. Also good to see Kim
Schoenadel & Lori Finn of KSA at the affair, not yet talking about re-tirement.
In addition to Sam's project at the Engineering School, their Founda-tion
just purchased the nearby former Grubbs Auto Servicenter prop-erty
which they will convert into a machine shop for engineering stu-dents
to use for working on their projects. Not much conversion in-volved
for that usage, so it should be in operation by March.
Some conspicuous construction underway as Quioccasin is closed on
the north side of Regency Mall after the flyover has been removed.
Not quite sure what the new owners of the Mall are trying to accom-plish
by that entrance/exit modification but I suppose we'll see in the
fullness of time.
Also noticeable, particularly if you were down at the Folk Festival, is
the excavation as the $26 million expansion project at the War Me-morial
gets started. That's going to add a shrine to honor veterans
from the Global War on Terror, 26,500 sq.ft. of educational space, a
parking deck with 170 spaces (2 levels underground and a third
above, more than tripling the Memorial's parking capacity), a lecture
hall and some office space. SMBW is the Architect & KBS the GC,
