Treating dogs with severe separation anxiety

Personal protection puppy training
Generalization simple means once a dog has learned the meaning of a command he will perform that command in any location and under distraction. An example of a dog that has not yet generalized a command is often seen when a dog owner learns that they can teach their dog a behavior in their kitchen but the minute their dog is taken out of the kitchen it seems to forget everything its learned. A dog has not generalized a SIT command when it will SIT in the kitchen or SIT in the garage but will not SIT when friends come over. Today I tell people that marker training is the most effective training system I have seen in my 50 plus years of training dogs. When I began to see marker trained dogs that were energetic well trained animals who loved working with their handlers I started to explore exactly what marker training was all about.
2 - In July of 2009, I finished a DVD titled THE POWER OF TRAINING DOGS WITH FOOD - with Michael Ellis. If you have trained dogs for years and think you're pretty good at it but you don't work with the marker system, I suggest you take a few days and study this article and these two DVDs You will find a whole new world of K9 communication.
For dogs to associate a behavior with a reward or with punishment the reward or punishment must come immediately after the behavior. This is radically different from old school dog training where dogs are corrected for doing something wrong.
It is also a perfect way to retrain adult dog (even dominant dogs) because the consequences of a behavior are not conflict with the handler. The basic foundation of marker training involves teaching the dog the meaning of these 5 core words. An interesting thing that seems to happen when dogs are trained to understand engagement is they view their handler as their own personal treat dispenser. YES is also a word that is used as a release command when the dog does something correctly.
A better example is when the dog has always been given the SIT command when you are standing in front of him in the kitchen.
So when you see a dog do this you need to know that your dog has not yet grasped the concept of the SIT command. Marker training is going to teach you how to communicate with your dog so they grasp the concepts of the commands you wish to train them and its going to do this is a way the dog enjoys. Reactive dogs have learned that if they try and figure out what their handlers want and they make a mistake - they get corrected. Trainers may want to take the time to establish and prioritize a list of dog treats that their dogs really love. Learning how to teach dog down command may be difficult for a dog with a dominant personality, but if you find a lure that is irresistible for your dog, he will move into the down position as quickly as a less dominant dog would. Mix up the exercises by alternating the sit and down commands You may find that once you teach these behaviors, your dog will be throwing them at you to obtain attention and rewards.
There are five important commands that every dog should know: sit, stay, lay down, come, and heel. As you enforce the 'sit' command, the dog will learn that when it wants something, or you are busy, sitting and waiting is the right thing to do.

The goal is for the dog to learn that when you give the 'sit' command, it is time to pay attention or calm down. Teach your dog to "stay." There are some commands that can literally save your dog's life and the "stay" command is one of them. A pup has an instinctive understanding of how to stay when being threatened and the mother uses a very distinct "stay" command as well.
You should also have a certain command to release your dog from the stay such as "okay!" or "come". Like training other commands, if the dog does not follow the command or does something different, start again from the beginning. Gently pull the dog towards you while saying "[dog's name], come!" You should do this in a more encouraging voice than you use for other commands, as you want the dog to want to come to you. Alternate stepping off with the left and using the heel command and then stepping off with the right and using the stay command.
This version of How to Teach Your Dog Basic Commands was reviewed by Pippa Elliott, MRCVS on August 28, 2015. A dog has not generalized the DOWN command when it will down on its rug in your living room but will not down in your yard when a neighbor is walking his dog past your house.
It's taken a long time and learning many failed training methods to settle into a system of dog training that consistently produces dogs that are engaged with me and dogs that generalize the work I am trying to teach them. The dog can perform the sit exercise 200 times in the kitchen and you may think he has that concept of the SIT command down pat. These dogs try to engage their handlers by trying to do things that make their handlers play with them, give them a food or toy reward or ask them to do something that will lead to these two things.
Most dogs pick up the concept of a CHARGED YES OR CHARGE THE CLICK in the first training session. When treats are so large they slow down the training because we have to wait for the dogs to chew them up we need to reduce the size or change the treat. More and more companies have become aware of the fact that people want quality treats for their dogs. These commands will help you communicate your wishes to your dog, essentially giving you a line of clear communication with your pet.
As your dog learns the verbal command, stop assisting the action and begin to use an accompanying hand signal.
When your dog learns this command well, you can start to increase the length of time while gradually moving away during the stay.
Once you have shown your dog how to come and what command you will give, place a piece of dry dog food at your feet and point to it.
Teaching your canine companion to heel will save your back, your shoulders, your dog's neck, and dignity for both of you (although, dignity may be low on the priority list for your dog). When you are ready to stop, you should stop on your left foot and say "[dog's name],sit." After a few repetitions you should no longer need to use the sit command. When your dog is consistently obeying the "heel" command properly, start unexpectedly starting of with the left foot and stopping without verbal commands or hand signals.

After you have both learned the commands well, then start to have sessions in different places so your dog will learn to listen in spite of distractions. Even if the dog was being disobedient before it came, the fact that it obeyed your last command will be the only thing it connects with the disciplinary action. The reason we start with food is that many high drive dogs can't focus in the presence of a toy.
To get the most out of marker training handlers need to determine what trips their dogs trigger.
Some dogs can lose focus (just like some dogs lose focus in the face of a tug reward) and they can't think. While some dogs will automatically drop to the floor for the lure, others won’t and you’ll need to slowly shape the behavior. Dogs have always been an important part of my life and in my neighborhood I have always been the “go to” person for anything dog-related. If you give your dog a good training in the basic commands, you set the groundwork for future advanced training, as well as simply aiding in a conflict free relationship with your furry best friend. Down actually stops whatever action was happening before the command, so it is useful in controlling behavior. The goal is for your dog to follow your command no matter what it is doing when you give it. Once it is obeying the spoken commands consistently, remain silent and only use the spoken commands for correction. If you become frustrated, move on or back to a command that your dog is better with and end your session on a positive note.
These people thought they could apply the same exact training principles to dogs and they convinced a lot of new dog trainers that they were right. If a new dog owner comes home and finds a pile of dog poop in his kitchen and he proceeds to rub the dogs nose in it, that dog doesn't have a clue why he is getting punished.
Your dog will want to start with you, so you use the "stay" command and walk around him back to the "place" position.
I also knew (because of the kind of dogs that I trained - high drive tough dogs that were trained to do handler protection work) that there are also precise places and times in a training program where a dog has to experience a correction for disobedience (we will discuss this in detail later in this article).
They both come in different flavors, they are soft and they are the right size for our dogs. It created dogs that were afraid to try and think on their feet because if they made a mistake they would get a correction.
Pet owners or new dog trainers are often lead to believe that dogs will eventually do things to make their owner feel good.
