Treating dogs with severe separation anxiety

Personal protection puppy training
No one knows for sure why some dogs begin to sample their own droppings or relish sampling the feces of other species.
You can also booby-trap a pet's feces by dabbing unpleasant additives like lemon juice and hot sauce on the poop. One sure-fire way to keep your pooch from eating his own poop: Clean it up before he has the chance. Q:  I have a 5-year-old golden retriever that has been eating his own poop since he was a puppy.
I am assuming that you allow your dog to poop in your backyard, as you say he finds it afterward to eat at his leisure.
If you just do not have the time to manage the cleaning up after the dog every time he poops, then you are going to have to live with the situation. One other tip: Sometimes the enzyme papain, when added to a dog's diet, will affect the poop in such a way that it no longer seems familiar to the dog.
If you're familiar with human youngsters, you'll recall a stage where a kid tries to put everything he can reach and pick up in his mouth. An older puppy, weaned for a while and eating commercial puppy food or homemade meals, might eat poop to fulfill his nutritional needs.
If your puppy starts eating poop on a regular basis, and the vet can't find a dietary or medical reason for it, prevention is worth a pound of cure -- or pounds of consumed dog feces.

He will not eat the poop of other dogs, only his own and only when it has been out for several hours.
From the dog's point of view, his poop tastes good and is available, so he sees no reason why he should not partake of it. If your puppy is snacking on his, uh, feces, rest assured that it's a natural if disgusting behavior.
Make sure your puppy is not getting an overload of grain in his meals -- meat should be the primary ingredient. If you are out of the house most of the day and he's left on his own, he's likely to get into stuff.
Clean up poop immediately, whether taking your puppy on walks or letting him out in the yard.
Once you get your pup out of the habit for a few months, you may not need to be so vigilant -- or you may be packing plastic bags and fast scooping for the rest of your pet's life.
I have read that this can be due to something missing in his diet, but we give him the best brand of food and our vet says he is perfectly healthy.
And it's worth noting that dogs who find their own feces delicious might view hot sauce and lemon juice as merely yummy condiments.
I have tried pills from the pet store that are supposed to make his poop taste bad, but it has no effect.

Some pet keepers with larger dogs have told me that when they add chopped dried papaya to the food of a poop-eating dog, the issue has gone away.
When left unsupervised, puppies may simply begin to investigate, play with, and even eat stools as a play, investigative or scavenging behavior. Since coprophagia may attract a great deal of owner attention, the behavior may be further reinforced.
In adult dogs the innate behavior of grooming and cleaning newborn puppies and eating their excrement, along with the well documented fact that dogs tend to be attracted to infections or discharges of their pack-mates, which they will sniff and lick, may explain some of the motivation for coprophagia. The owner that uses the outmoded, inhumane and useless training technique of "sticking the dog's nose" in its stool when it has soiled the home, may be further encouraging coprophagia.
If the dog is taught to come to the owners and sit for a special food treat immediately following elimination, the new behavior may become a permanent habit.
Remote punishment and disruption devices may also be useful in that they can interrupt the dog as it approaches the stool without any direct association with the owner. A remote spray collar may therefore be effective if the owner supervises the dog from a distance (or by watching through a window to the backyard) and immediately and consistently interrupts the dog every time it begins to mouth stools.
