Treating dogs with severe separation anxiety

To estimate how many calories your dog needs to consume per day, you need to know his ideal body weight. Of course, you need to understand your dog’s ideal bodyweight to know much he should be eating.
Still, 45 pounds is about average, and at that poundage, a typical adult pitbull needs approximately 1,100 calories per day. If your pit bull is super, super active (or if he’s a workin’ dog), he’ll of course need a lot more: up to 1,700 calories for very active dogs.
For whatever reason, pit bulls are prone to skin and coat problems, and a lot of these problems come from allergies. An easy way to stop this before it starts is to simply avoid foods that most commonly trigger allergies in dogs. Gastric torsion, or bloat, is when your dog’s stomach twists on itself and stops releasing gasses, which can cause extreme bloating and can be fatal.
Secondly, space your dog’s meals out throughout the day, so that they’re eating smaller portions more frequently.
The rules of thumb here are to (1) be careful about overfeeding your dog and (2) buy dog foods that have higher protein content and plenty of produce—both of which are nutrient-dense and can help your pit maintain his weight. This is one of the few foods out there (in our opinion) that really knocks it out of the park. Most of carbohydrates come from sweet potatoes, although it also contains some white potatoes, which (as mentioned above) could be an allergen for some dogs. Like all the other dog foods we’re recommending for pit bulls, this is a high-protein recipe with no grains. The only real reason we didn’t put this food higher on our list was that the third ingredient is potato, and pit bulls tend to have allergies. If you suspect that your dog has a food allergy, you’ll want to take a close look at the ingredients in his food.
Many owners have found that dog foods designed for allergic dogs have done wonders for their pet.
If you consider switching your dog to a simplified diet or a limited-ingredient food, you’ll need to be patient. Later, after we had Elsie tested for allergies and learned that she was allergic to feathers (among many other items), we decided to stay away from poultry and moved her to Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Venison Formula Dog Food.
You’ll find that this limited-ingredient food is more expensive than the regular grocery store brand food. Cassandra then asked to be referred to a veterinary dermatologist.  Being in the veterinary field, Cassandra knew how difficult allergies could be for dogs and their owners and she wanted to get Clayton on the right treatment as soon as possible.

The answer to that is going to be somewhat similar to asking what the best food is for a bodybuilder. A dog a little further along in life might need considerable less, say, about 875 calories. Plus, most dog foods out there (and certainly the ones we’re recommending here) have plenty of fat.
Two meals is usually fine, but you divide your dog’s food into three or four meals if that makes you more comfortable. These dog food brands refer to themselves as “simplified diet” or “limited-ingredient” food. It will take eight to twelve weeks before you’ll be able to notice an improvement (or lack thereof) in your dog.
If you give your dog treats, you’ll need to find treats that match the ingredients in your special dog food. I did some online searching and read about a Boxer rescue owner who swore by Natural Balance’s Potato and Duck Food for colitis treatment. But if it helps your dog’s allergies, the extra expense could pay off in the long run by saving you vet visits. For a while, Cassandra also had Clayton on Atopica, a drug designed for dog allergies, but it was also not effective in treating his condition. Eventually things will get better for you and your dog, but you will have to be willing to work for it. Because we ask several registered dog handlers and pit bull enthusiasts about it (in addition to doing some research and testing some foods), and we came up with what we think is a great list of food recommendations for your pit. It’s usually enough just to make sure your dog’s food has at least one good source of fat, like fish or flax. Shoot for higher protein content instead, and look for foods that include carbs from good, slow-burning sources, like lentils.
So, if your pit is prone to allergies, make sure you ask your vet about a good, protein-rich, hypoallergenic diet. About 43% of this food comes from solid sources of protein: real duck, turkey meal, and salmon meal (we love seeing fish in our dog foods). When the steroids and Atopica did not help, they started Clayton on a food elimination program to try to identify which foods he may be allergic to.
They found he was allergic to 70 of the 75 allergens, the top three being human dander, wool, and cat dander.
Think of it from your dog’s perspective, they are itching like crazy and can’t tell you what is making them itch.
It is likely that Cassandra will always have to treat Clayton’s allergies, but through her efforts, she is giving him a much more comfortable quality of life.

Secondly, pit bulls are usually pretty active, and active dogs just tend to need more protein than non-active dogs. However, if your dog exhibits year-round allergy symptoms that can’t be cleared up with flea treatments or by minimizing the effects of inhalant allergies, it’s likely that the ingredients in these commercial foods are causing problems for your pet. It does your dog no good to feed him a special diet, while feeding him table scraps and dog treats that include ingredients he’s allergic to. They eventually found that Clayton was allergic to chicken, turkey, duck, beef, rabbit and fish. Since Clayton and many other dogs are allergic to beef, they can have allergic reactions when they digest gelatin. Cassandra also purchased a Lycra body suit from K9 Top Coat, which some dog owners use to protect their dog’s skin by reducing irritation. After trying different brands of food, Cassandra eventually found that Nutro’s limited ingredient Venison Meal and Brown Rice food worked. Cassandra also recommends that if you find that your dog needs to be on a limited diet, don’t feel bad about not being able to feed them scraps or everyday treats. Unless you are feeding your dog a “limited ingredient” formula, chances are, that so-called two ingredient food also includes many of the top allergen foods listed above, including wheat, beef, eggs, and more. These formulas often promote the fact that they include “no grains,” which are often the cause of many food allergies. If a medication is provided in a gelatin capsule, she first opens the capsule and sprinkles the powder on Clayton’s food. The key is that these foods don’t mix several kinds of proteins and carbohydrates, but focus on one key ingredient of each.
Because her dogs sleep in her bed, Cassandra uses a special allergen detergent to wash her bedding. Your dog won’t know the difference and they’ll just be excited that you are giving them something to eat.
This simplification eliminates the filler ingredients like corn, wheat, and soy, which can cause problems for many dogs.
Benadryl, Zyrtec and other human medications used to treat dog allergies can be purchased much cheaper at these stores.
