Treating dogs with severe separation anxiety

Personal protection puppy training
And, the good news is that if you have an older dog that needs a little help in this area, that is no problem at all, even old dogs can learn a few new tricks!
You wouldn’t bring a baby home from the hospital and expect no dirty diapers and you wouldn’t smack your toddler in the face for having a bad day or an accident or two. If you expect it, you won’t be surprised or livid when it happens and you will be prepared to deal with it appropriately! If you throw a fit and scare your puppy he associates YOU with something bad, not having an accident or going potty in the house. This is why so many dogs sneak out of the room to urinate or defecate, not because they are ashamed or they know it is wrong to potty inside… it is because they have been taught not to go potty in front of you (which makes this process so much harder!). Crates are not devices of torture, they are tools to help you with potty training and other things (like keeping your puppy from eating things he shouldn’t).
You need your puppy to be comfortable going potty in front of you so that you can learn his schedule.
Pick a certain place outside in your yard and be sure to take your puppy to it each time you take him outside! It doesn’t matter if it is 100 degrees or 10 below zero; raining or snowing, if you don’t go outside and monitor your puppy you will not know if or when he is going potty outside which means he is likely to come back inside and go potty. Puppies would much rather play with leaves and bugs than go potty, if you aren’t there to see that you won’t know your pup needs to go back into his crate and come out again 5-10 minutes later!
If you leave him outside for an extended period of time, chances are when you bring him back in he will need to go outside again soon or have an accident. Give him naps in his crate regularly at the same time so your pup gets use to a routine and gets into a habit. Take him outside and play with and train him on a schedule so he gets the attention he needs.
I recommend an inside tether (never leave him alone on a tether) and keeping him with you on a leash if you need to at all times!
Sure, accidents happen but if you make it your goal to ensure his success you will both be happy in a short amount of time! Potty training in and of itself is a tough process, it requires a lot of time and sincere consistency!  Most people prefer training their dog to go outside to do their business, however there are some dogs that HATE going outside in different types of weather and prefer to stay indoors all the time, for these dogs there is indoor potty training.
Indoor potty training is even recommended occasionally when dogs (especially little dogs) are having a particularly difficult time housebreaking.  Sometimes it is simply easier to embrace the problem and work towards a common goal together it is like a give and take between you and your dog.
Once you have decided that teaching your dog to go inside is what will work for you best both, indoor dog housebreaking can be fairly easy.

Make sure that you have several areas that your dog can relieve himself.  You may, later, restrict this to one or two areas but during training it is best to have a few places when your dog has to go. There are several options that you can use, or even a combination of items you can use to help you in your quest toward better dog potty training. Potty Pads are usually marketed to puppies or for puppy training, but they can also be used to help your adult or larger dog use the appropriate spot!
Years ago, before there were doggy toilets, this was how we trained Service Dogs for people with disabilities to be able to go on cruises and tactfully urinate and defecate.  This is a very effective system!
Just like training your dog to go outside and potty, you must take your dog to the designated area and allow him time to get comfortable and do his duty. Be patient, and use the designated areas throughout the house so that your dog is familiar with each locale.  Quietly praise him and reward him with a treat for a correct decision and soon indoor potty training will be a thing of the past! Take your dog outside after 3 key events: Right after waking upAfter each one of his mealsAfter play time.
The key to potty training a puppy successfully is to click and praise appropriate behavior. Using a schedule is a great way to teach your pet a routine but life is often more complicated than that.Potty training a puppy also requires that you learn how to read your pet's body signals. As your puppy starts growing older and learning to go potty outside, you can start giving your pet more freedom. Some puppies are very proficient when they are very young and some puppies take longer to gain this control and understanding. By yelling you are teaching him to avoid going potty “in front of you” you are not potty training him! People who bring their puppies straight home and allow complete access to the house, have the most trouble with potty training.
Potty training is all about you and it is your responsibility when he is young to help him be successful. These are the times at which the puppy will need to eliminate and because you can arrange for this times to be scheduled according to your availability, you can use them to teach your dog to ONLY eliminate outside. When you take your pet outside after a meal or waking up, let your dog explore and pay NO attention to him. It means you should measure the correct amount of food, place the food bowl down on the floor for up to 15 min, letting the dog eat during that time and then picking it back up and emptying it out.Efficient and scheduled eating is key when potty training a puppy.

If the crate is bigger your dog might find a spot to pee and still sleep comfortably away from it. This could be subtle things, so your keen eye needs to stay alert throughout the training process to learn this. In this case DO NOT punish your dog (NEVER yell, hit, kick your puppy), clean the area with an enzymatic cleaner and continue with the plan. It is just a matter of learning the best way to communicate what you want in a way in which your pet can understand it.
This means that only when your puppy is about 6 months of age he will be able to hold his bladder for 7-8 hours (a work day).
This is important for what is about to happen. The moment your puppy finishes his business you will click, praise, treat, celebrate and play!…yes, take your time to do all this. Common behaviors are circling, smelling, walking towards the door that leads outside, pawing the door or trying to get your attention. Water should be available every hour and as your dog learns to only go potty outside become available throughout the day.
Learning these body cues your dog performs before going potty will help you on days where the schedule has been changed. If you punish your pet (by rubbing his nose on the soiled area or any other form of punishment) for something he did in the past, he won't understand it is because of him peeing inside. Your pet might learn that going potty signals going back inside, and he might start delaying this event. Your puppy will think he was punished for whatever it is he was doing 2 seconds before the punishment (sleeping, playing, etc.). Instead, spending a few minutes after he is done with play and walk time will make this a great routine your dog will want to continue doing.
We currently have no means of telling a dog that something that he did in the past was wrong, as we would tell a child or adult human.
Using a clicker to mark the correct behavior is great because the timing will be excellent and the dog already has a good association with the click sound.
