A vaginal or labial cut or tear (fissure) is a painful split, crack or break in the mucous membrane (skin) inside the vagina, on the inner or outer labia (vulva), on the perineum, or around the clitoris or clitoral hood. Vulva and vaginal tears are very common because the flesh is very delicate, but the good news is that they usually heal very quickly without intervention and without leaving scars. Things start to get more complex when your fissuring is being caused by something inside your body, and with larger tears inside the vagina that include the vaginal wall. You need to determine which it is, because the treatments are very different, and it’s possible that you may be seeing the signs of an underlying condition unrelated to your vagina. Posterior fourchette fissures (the fork in the bottom of the vaginal entrance) can start to branch into the realm of the Deep and Nasty Tear which you will need to treat differently. You may have an infection of some kind anyway, but that needs to be dealt with in other ways: douching will never get rid of an infection of any kind. A dry, easily-torn vagina may be the result of lowered oestrogen levels that come with ageing (nearing, during or after menopause) or other low-oestrogen conditions.
Latex may cause irritation to the vaginal walls with or without allergy, resulting in an irritated vagina and easier tearing by dried out condoms.
During your period, heavy or incorrect use of tampons can cause splits in the entrance to your vagina. Yeast infections can be a risk factor particularly when antibiotics have been used, as first the yeast, then the antibiotics, disrupt the natural bacterial balance.
You will not be told to chant and dance and sprinkle your vagina with magic fairy dust, just so we’re clear.

Candida and the many other germs that normally live in the vagina keep each other in balance.

External structures of the female reproductive anatomy include the labium minora and majora, the vagina and the clitoris. Yeast infections may follow a course of antibiotics that were prescribed for another purpose. These types of cuts and tears can cause pain, sting when you urinate, and can bleed at first, and may itch as they heal.
These types of cuts and tears are commonly caused by childbirth and sex accidents or trauma, and should be treated by your physician as a serious wound.
Don’t douche with anything, as you will upset the natural balance of bacteria that actually protect your vaginal mucous membranes and keep your vagina healthy. Don’t irritate your vulva or vagina by using tampons, diaphragms, Nuva rings, condoms or other vaginal devices, creams, lotions or potions until you are fully healed.
Do not self-prescribe – hormones need to be handled with care, particularly after menopause and in particular for those who are post-breast-cancer (see atrophic vaginitis article specially for you). This isn’t the only troublesome infection, however, as STIs can impact on your vaginal flesh and flora too.
The tears from childbirth are a topic of their own, as these fissures are often much fiercer and need proper medical attention (possibly stitches or other surgery) and care to help them heal properly and avoid infection.

The torn skin is cut out completely and replaced by vaginal skin to cover the gap, then  stitched up.
This is called a wet mount and KOH test.Vaginal dischargeVaginal discharge refers to secretions from the vagina. Candida is a yeast (fungus) that causes mild disease, but in immunocompromised individuals it may cause life-threatening illness.
Tears inside the vagina are impossible for you to see, which is why getting examined by a physician with a torch isn’t a bad idea. Do not insert any creams or gels into the vagina unless prescribed by your physician, particularly antibacterial creams. Herpes is a virus that causes sores to appear on and around the vagina, but is not the same as a cut or tear. Although many women feel cleaner if they douche after their period or intercourse, it may worsen vaginal discharge.
Douching removes healthy bacteria lining the vagina that protect against infection.Eat yogurt with live cultures or take Lactobacillus acidophilus tablets when you are on antibiotics.
