Menstruation - A woman is most likely to develop a yeast infection around the time of her period.
Although yeast infections are very common among women, they can be difficult to accurately self-diagnose. Remember that there are other potential reasons why you may be experiencing abnormal vaginal discharge and vaginal discomfort, including other infections such as bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis. If you keep having repeat infections, this is also something you should discuss with your doctor. To keep your yeast levels in check, your doctor may prescribe a medication (such as Diflucan or Fluconazole) that you take once or twice a week for up to six months.
A pretty mild remedy, cranberries are especially useful if you think you might be coming down with a yeast infection. If you experience regular yeast infections, you should consider cutting back on the amount of sugar and caffeine you consume on a regular basis.

Like I mentioned earlier, I’ve spent the past 25 years of my naturopathic career researching and treating Candida yeast infections. It’s not as easy as buying a tiny e-book or taking a couple of antifungal products for a few weeks! It’s important to remember that it takes time to treat and eradicate an chronic yeast infection. Some of the information on this page won’t seem new to those of you who have been struggling with a yeast infection for months or even several years.
However, if you are new to the idea of a yeast infection, I hope that you find yourself inspired enough to take action.
One of the things I’ve found most alarming about chronic Candida yeast infections, is the lack of information traditional medical doctors have in this area. Countless patients have come to me for relief after their traditional physicians were unsuccessful at eliminating their symptoms permanently. These four factors may not seem like a big deal, but combine them together and you’re ultimately attacking your body on a daily basis, destroying friendly bacteria and damaging your immune system’s ability to recover from any infection.
Young children unfortunately do receive antibiotics from their medical doctor all too often, and in my clinical experience because they were weaned very early and placed on a cow’s milk formula. If a baby contracts a Candida yeast infection from her mother, she hasn’t got sufficient immune power to fight it off. As the Candida makes its way through your body, it moves from place to place, creating a systemic infection or overgrowth. As you can now begin to understand, a chronic yeast infection slowly but surely occurs due to a rather complex chain of events which taking place over a prolonged period time. Unfortunately, if you’ve been fighting a yeast infection for a while, it may seem like you’re allergic to just about everything, and getting worse by the year, and we’re not just talking about food allergies either. During the evening hours, when you’re sleeping and ultimately not eating, yeast will continue to search your body for glucose as their primary food source. Many years ago when I began to specialize in treating patients with Candida yeast infections in my naturopathic clinic, I found that approximately two thirds of the individuals I met who were suffering from Candida were women.
It is a common occurrence for many women to have a vaginal yeast infection right before they menstruate each month, and this occurs is primarily because their estrogen levels naturally drop, allowing progesterone levels to rise. There are many pharmaceutical drugs and dietary supplements available today that can assist in eradicating a Candida yeast infection, including drugs such as Diflucan and Nystatin, as well as many different natural medicines like caprylic acid.
I have known of many patients over the years that did not follow these recommendations and made big changes overnight to their diet, they took antifungal supplements at high dosages because they wanted to “kill the Candida fast”. Many patients I’ve seen tend to overlook the important role of digestive enzymes when it comes to eradicating a yeast infection. The Candida yeast organism also creates a chemical known as arabinitol, produced from dietary carbohydrates such as arabinose when yeasts are rapidly growing in the low oxygen (anaerobic) environment of the small intestine.
When I first started treating patients with chronic yeast infections more than twenty years ago, I was still ignorant in terms of just how tough it can be to eradicate Candida, and like most practitioners, believed that all it took was a two or three week dietary program with a few good supplements. I knew it was possible, and the best thing to do was to just keep on treating yeast infection patient after patient and perfect my methods over a prolonged period of time, never being satisfied like most all practitioners with “average” results. Once you have a better understanding of what yeast infections actually are, we’ll talk about diagnosing and identifying your yeast infection.
You are probably looking at that list of symptoms and are wondering just how you can confirm that what you’re feeling isn’t actually chronic fatigue syndrome or irritable bowel syndrome, or any of a number of other ailments, but is actually a Candida yeast infection.
When treating an acute yeast infection – one that is easily diagnosed, like vaginal thrush, jock itch, or athlete’s foot, your doctor may prescribe an oral medication or a topical cream. I’ve always found it quite unbelievable that doctors never tell their patients about foods that encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria and that discourage yeast infections.
I cover all of these drugs and their respective side-effects in detail in Chapter 6 (The Medical Treatment of Yeast Infections) of the book Candida Crusher, but let’s just say that the first two have a reputation as “safe” antifungal drugs. Those with a history of eczema, psoriasis, chronic vaginal yeast infection, endometriosis, allergies, irritable bowel syndrome (or any kind of chronic digestive problem), gluten or dairy allergies, and autoimmune conditions generally experience enormous benefit form eliminating those potentially allergenic foods that are inadvertently causing sensitivities. Throughout the first two Steps you may find there will be certain times where you actually feel worse than you did before you set out on your yeast infection healing journey.
There are some herbal medicines and specialized dietary supplements that you can take to help decrease the severity of these reactions, and because the dosage and selection may vary from person to person; you should seek the assistance of your naturopath or doctor who understands the more natural approach towards yeast infection treatment.
A vaginal yeast infection, also known as vaginal candidiasis, can develop when there are too many yeast cells growing in the vagina.[1] Though the symptoms can range from being annoying to unbearable, most yeast infections can easily be treated. If you have never had a yeast infection before or are unsure about the diagnosis, then you should schedule an appointment with your doctor or a nurse at your gynecologist's office.Your doctor or nurse will perform a brief vaginal examination, and then use a cotton swab to take a sample of vaginal discharge in order to conduct a yeast count. Research has shown that only 35% of women with a history of yeast infection were able to correctly diagnose a yeast infection from their symptoms alone.[14][15] Herpes outbreaks and allergic reactions to laundry detergent are frequently confused with yeast infections.
For example, many of the symptoms of a yeast infection are very similar to those of an STD.[16] If you have a recurring yeast infections, your doctor may need to perform a cultures test to determine if a candida species other than C. Remember that you should only treat a yeast infection yourself if you are fully confident in your diagnosis. While mild yeast infections should go away within a few days, more severe infections could take longer to effectively treat. Cranberries can treat and prevent both yeast infections and urinary tract infections.[27] Be sure you buy 100% cranberry juice, as the sugar in cranberry juice cocktail will only make matters worse. The sugar in chocolate, candy, and even fruit juice can cause blood sugar spikes, which promote the growth of yeast. Although they are marketed for curing stomach pains, hangovers and body aches, and not for yeast infections, the citric acid in them can cure the early stages of a yeast infection. Those Suffering Some Time: If you’re in this second group, you’ve been suffering for a little bit of time, and have worked out that a yeast infection is your big concern. Those Suffering A Long Time: If you’re in the third group, you’ve been suffering for a very long time, ten years or more.

The truth, though, is that I’ve spent the past 25 years of my career as a naturopathic physician talking to thousands of people who feel like their lives have been ruined. I’ve not only eradicated my own serious infection, but have helped an incredible amount of others in my clinic. Anyone who tells you that you can clear up a chronic condition in hours, days, even several weeks, is touting something designed to appeal to today’s quick-result mentality. My many years of hands-on treatment and Candida research have led me to write the most comprehensive self-help guide to eradicating a yeast infection ever created. Either way, you’re finally going to learn once and for all how to deal with your Candida yeast infection in such a way that prevents it from coming back in the short term, or worse, in the future.
They obviously believe in acute conditions, like vaginal yeast infections or athlete’s foot. Symptoms like low thyroid function, poor energy levels, problems with concentration, multiple chemical and food allergies, decreased sex drive, psoriasis and many unexplained skin rashes, many and varied bowel problems such as irritable bowel syndrome, and even sinus infections can be related to Candida.
Babies don’t generally develop yeast issues because of antibiotics, their yeast imbalances are generally passed onto them from their mother. This is an even more common scenario if the child is born by way of a C-section; but she can otherwise develop a yeast infection from vaginal delivery in her mother has a vaginal yeast infection, or from nursing, sharing food products, or even being kissed by those who have a chronic yeast infection. As a result, even the areas of your body that were once well oxygenated become depleted and affected by your immune system’s response to candida and what we call candida metabolites, or toxins such as gliotoxin and mannan, which are produced after Candida dies.
When this occurs, not only can the yeast organism escape, but microscopic particles of undigested food ends up in your bloodstream, challenging your immune system as well. As a matter of fact, those with a chronic Candida overgrowth will desire or even crave sugars and carbohydrates because of the chemical acetaldehyde the yeast organism creates in your body. But when you have a chronic Candida yeast infection or if you have a nutritional deficiency of the vitamins B3, B6 or B12, the minerals selenium, iron, molybdenum or the amino acid glutamine, levels of acetaldehyde steadily build up, and as acetaldehyde levels increase in the body’s tissues and toxicity develops.
I discovered that many of the causative factors like antibiotic exposure were similar between men and women, so I figured a part of the difference could be traced to the hormones in birth control pills, (particularly progesterone), which Candida albicans thrives on. While they do work, these measures when used alone won’t completely eradicate a systemic yeast overgrowth, and I’ll explain why. With the added toxic burden from a chronic Candida yeast infection, your liver can quickly become overloaded. These are the patients who are more likely to be the ones who became so incredibly sick from their toxic Candida overload, that they literally couldn’t take any products for a very long time to eradicate their yeast infection.
Nearly every person I have seen in my clinic who has a chronic Candida yeast infection will experience an impaired ability of their stomach (and particularly of their pancreas) to operate at full functional capacity, this creates an inability of these digestive organs to produce sufficient enzymes for their metabolism needs. In addition, poor digestion allows bacteria and yeasts to thrive in an intestinal environment rich in partially broken down foods.
Because this sugar is found in sweet apples, grapes, and different kinds of pears, you may now understand why sweet fruits are not the best of foods to consume when you commence the Candida Crusher Program, in particular those who have a severe case of a yeast infection. But antifungal treatment cannot unfortunately undo any of the crosslinks once they have been formulated and been inside your body for many years, and treatment can only hope to prevent any further formation of new cross-links by reducing the production of yeast induced arabinose. How wrong I was, and while a very few people were helped, this common approach was clearly not capable of wiping out a chronic yeast infection in a person who had developed their illness over several years. There are dozens of other conditions that may be indicative of a yeast infection that I haven’t mentioned.
While we have already established that women have it worse than men up to two thirds of the time, that’s not to say that men can’t get yeast infections. I can tell you, after 25 years of study and clinical experience, that Candida can and does grow in the bodies of individuals who do not have cancer, hepatitis or AIDS. Women who have severe or recurring infections are often given a drug known as Fluconazole, but it’s odd to continue taking a medication week after week without really searching for the underlying cause of your recurring infections.
Earlier we talked about Candida growing resistant to medications, and these drugs are definitely amongst those the yeast organism can defend itself against. I first learned about Nystatin back in the 1980’s and even used to prescribe it when I worked in a medical center not long after I started to practice, after reading about it in Dr. I find that it doesn’t work in all yeast infection cases and some patients experience the most horrific die-off or side effects when using it. I’ll show you how to stick with the dietary program when times are tough, and believe me – if you have a chronic yeast infection, times will get tough! We’ll initially talk about cleansing the body by completing a “Big Clean-Up”, a body detoxification tidy-up that can make all the difference towards partial or a full and complete recovery from a chronic yeast infection, how to get the best kinds of fiber and nutrients into your diet by eating special foods and juices, amongst other things. We’ll talk about the importance of choosing organic foods, why you should generally avoid red meat (or cut back to no more than one pound, or 500 grams per week), as well as the best fruits and vegetables to eat and to avoid, what you’re actually allowed to drink, and the best dietary supplements you should be including. Most all patients I’ve ever seen with a chronic Candida yeast infection have leaky gut syndrome (LGS) and multiple food allergies, and for this reason, Stage 2 of the Candida Crusher diet is the only Candida diet that understands the relevance and importance of this Stage, and you will find that it can make the difference between failure and complete success. I always recommend that you begin any supplement program cautiously, In Candida Crusher, I have written plenty of useful information on how to get the best from your yeast infection dietary supplement program, the common mistakes people make and why many people in fact waste their money when they just buy and take supplements to help eradicate their yeast infection.
But do keep in mind that many women who've had yeast infections before still make mistakes in diagnosing themselves.
You’ve either been diagnosed as having a Candida yeast infection overgrowth and you are looking for remedies or you aren’t sure but stumbled on this page after you researched your symptoms (I have written an extensive piece on most common and not so common yeast infection symptoms which you can read by clicking here). These people aren’t really aware of the consequences of letting yeast run rampant in their bodies, and they don’t really understanding that eradicating Candida isn’t as simple as popping a few pills a day for a couple of weeks.
I would now like to show you what to do about a yeast infection and how to prevent it from recurring in your life in the future. One such popular plan currently available offers a 60-day plan to “eliminate” Candida, but in the majority of cases it is simply not possible to eradicate a chronic yeast infection in only two months. In the early stages of my career as a Naturopath, I initially thought that one or two simple products and a quick diet change would cure just about any yeast infection. The Candida Crusher book spans 718 pages, and offers everything you need to know about Candida in terms of how it functions, how to diagnose it, how to treat it, and how to keep it under control, but most importantly – have to get rid of that yeast infection for good, whether you have an acute vaginal infection or a chronic and recurring yeast infection.
I’m talking about a permanent yeast solution, and this means that if you are ready to finally get well, and are committed enough to follow the Candida Crusher Program, then you will get well just like thousands of others have who have come to see me in my clinic over the years. Men and women of all ages – even children – can develop yeast infections in a wide variety of manifestations. Back in 1950, farmers didn’t feed their cattle, pigs, chicken, and cows any foods that contained antibiotics. Once Candida has advanced and proliferated in your digestive tract, unlike bacteria, yeast can morph from aerobic (requiring oxygen) to anaerobic (not requiring any oxygen) organisms, making it a lot easier for them to move anywhere in the body they like, whether there is an fresh oxygenated blood (arteries) or any de-oxygenated blood (veins). I’ve seen many hundreds of cases of young children who developed chronic yeast infections after having been prescribed multiple rounds of antibiotics after ear, nose are throat or digestive infections, which occurred after being weaned onto a cow’s milk formula to soon, a food which in many instances will be found to be a highly allergenic food to a very young child with an immature immune system. This is particularly true for certain susceptible children who have poor immunity and a yeast infection, and who then go on to receive their childhood vaccinations, which some experts now believe may contain substances that may contribute to the development of ASD. That’s why some people experience a relief from symptoms after taking a medication, only to have them return, and this is because they have only dealt with the Candida in the more oxygenated and therefore easily accessible areas of the body.
In many chronic cases however, it may struggle to gain control, and even if it does, the Candida yeast infection will ultimately begin to take over again.

Now you can begin to understand why those with a chronic yeast infection can feel so tired and washed out. This is because the effect that pharmaceutical drugs and supplements have on Candida is similar to the effect antibiotics have on bacteria in that, over time, the yeast organism can in fact become stronger, more resistant and even partially immune to the effects of many of these treatments. Candida can basically hibernate until it’s safe to come out again, and this is one of the main reasons why, after taking a supplement or medication, you do feel better and think that your problem is solved but eventually regress and begin to feel bad again. When your body has developed too much tartaric acid because of a chronic yeast infection, it can’t metabolize and properly use malic acid for energy production. I needed to learn all I could about this all too common complaint that was capable of ruining a person’s life, and then work on a Candida treatment plan that didn’t only offer relief, but was capable of permanently eradicating a person’s chronic Candida yeast infection for life. In short, doctors are trained to look for only the most severe cases of systemic Candida, the most dangerous kinds of yeast infections that really do attack those who are compromised. I’m not sure which would be worse, yeast infection symptoms or the side effects of these drugs or both.
William Crook’s book, “The Yeast Connection.” If you do wish to talk to your doctor about antifungal drug, forget the “zole” kinds of drugs and ask about this one.
He was most probably the first physician to notice the link between antibiotics and yeast infections. Natural medicine does work well when it comes to yeast infections, and I prefer to approach the treatment of Candida yeast as naturally as possible, and that’s where the Candida Crusher Program comes into play, a program that has been successfully implemented for many years not only in my own clinic, but in the clinics of several naturopaths and integrative medical doctors throughout Australia and New Zealand, health-care professionals I’ve helped to understand the importance of Candida treatment. As the yeast infection begins to reduce and slowly die off, the Candida will release toxins or metabolic by-products from these dying or dead yeast organisms. They most certainly haven’t come to the realization yet that some of those pills, like antibiotics, may have landed them in this situation to begin with.
During the childbirth process, while a baby really needs to be obtaining nutrients as well as beneficial bacterial flora through his mother, these kids contracted candida yeast instead. Instead of growing stronger, they remained compromised as their condition worsened with age. I’ve found that four to six months is a much more realistic time frame, and a nine month recovery is even more realistic if you have a chronic yeast infection.
Yet for some reason, they choose to most always treat the presenting symptoms in their offices rather than running any extra test such as a stool culture for Candida to determine if the patient is suffering with a chronic yeast infection, rather than a superficial one.
When doctors prescribed them for bacterial infections, they were less likely to prescribe them incorrectly and they were more restrained in their use, especially in the early days.
Unless you’re eating organic meats, you will also be consuming some of the antibiotic residues the animals you are eating have absorbed into their muscle tissue. Their compromised young bodies just don’t have the ability to adequately deal with the onslaught of many different toxins, including a Candida yeast infection.
Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of “incurable” people with chronic yeast infections who have been struggling for long periods of time with these kinds of food, inhalant, chemical and environmental allergies.
An interesting point worth mentioning is that most of the women I have seen over the years with chronic yeast infections tend to be aged from their early 20’s to early mid 40’s. Bearing that in mind, it’s not surprising to see how adrenal fatigue can also contribute to the development of a Candida yeast infection, as the lower levels of beta estrogen produced by fatigued adrenal glands will contribute to higher progesterone levels as well.
Your tests may not show a Candida infection, but the yeast is waiting in other areas of your body, mutating and multiplying and waiting for the right opportunity to come along so that it can once again proliferate.
When the environment is safe again, the yeast can reactivate and continue living in your body. While your ultimate goal is to eradicate a Candida yeast infection in your body, doing so too quickly or incorrectly may cause even far higher levels of toxins to be released into your blood. And yes, your Candida yeast infection overgrowth can certainly be cured in time, by following my Candida Crusher methods. Normal your spit is clear and floats at the top, though I should caution you that a negative spit test doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have a problem with yeast. What many people aren’t aware of is that it is not possible to “cure” a yeast infection with an antifungal drug, all you do is reduce the yeast population and create side-effects while trying to achieve this.
The notable Australian naturopath William Vayda was recommending their patients trial Nystatin, and found it to be superior to most other natural treatments which were currently available at the time in the 1970’s to treat yeast infections.
I’ve seen many patients like this over the years and have built my reputation on turning many of these cases around. I made a lot of mistakes in those early days of treating patients with yeast infections, mistakes I no longer make. A patient may pass dead yeast out through their stool, but if candida can be cultured from a stool sample then their yeast infection is chronic. The problem is that antibiotics are not discriminatory; they don’t know the difference between good and bad bacteria. I’ve written about this extensively in my book Candida Crusher, those who eat commercially produced meats will be taking in low-dose antibiotics that will undermine the beneficial bacteria in their digestive system during the digestive process. Unfortunately, the reality is that the more women who harbor an underlying yeast infection, the higher the likelihood will be that their offspring will be born with a yeast infection and susceptible to all the chronic problems associated with it.
The same goes for getting rid of a Candida yeast infection permanently, so it’s better to do it right the first time.
If you suddenly develop food allergies, chances are you have leaky gut syndrome – and, of naturally, a Candida yeast infection. Like antibiotics, in the beginning your supplement or drug may certainly work, but the space it has cleared in your digestive system well end up becoming a breeding ground over time for increasingly resistant strains of Candida spores and other microorganisms. This ability to create spores, hide, and avoid the immune system is one of the main reasons why those suffering from Candida can spend years and years with on-again-off-again symptoms. A chronic yeast infection can assist in setting up an environment where cancer can flourish in the body, but it is not solely responsible for causing cancer.
You could have dysbiosis, or a bacterial problem, and not necessarily have a yeast infection.
Once you stop the drugs, the yeast not only grows back again, but the yeast becomes increasingly resistant to the effects of the drug in order to survive. If you have a very mild case of Candida, like a simple toe nail yeast infection, you may be able to skip this, but if you have a true problem with overgrowth, this step is absolutely critical! If you are one of those people I see who are moving through your Candida Crusher Program much too quickly and have a tendency to be very impatient, or you have had a chronic yeast infection for an extended period of time, these allergic reaction can in fact be potentially quite severe. Some people who come to see with their yeast infection bring boxes or even several plastic bags full of products, the symptom are still there and they end up becoming even more disillusioned after parting with all that cash because they generally get to the point where they realize that just by taking all those pills, the cure just doesn’t seem to be forthcoming.
But more importantly, doctors treat the symptoms are rarely if ever even worry about addressing any underlying causes of their patient’s yeast infection.
Doctors initially prescribed the antifungal drug Nystatin when they prescribed antibiotics, but have long since stopped and now just give the antibiotics. A good understanding of this die-off process, and how you can avoid such aggravations, will pay huge dividends, because the more careful and slow you go about the introduction of your yeast elimination plan and dietary supplement use, the less severe the die off will be.
