If you were to take a swab of your skin and grow the cells on a petri dish, you’d likely find lots of bacteria and fungal organisms living and growing without hurting your health. Candidiasis of the skin can occur anywhere on the skin, but it is most likely to occur on areas where the skin is folded. A wide variety of candida fungi exist, but Candida albicans is the most common cause of candidiasis, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH, 20120). Babies can experience candidiasis, especially on the buttocks, where a diaper tends to provide a warm, moist environment. Candida albicans is the same fungus that causes vaginal yeast infections in women and oral thrush, a condition that causes white patches to appear in your mouth. Frequent candida infections can be a sign of an underlying immunodeficiency disorder such as HIV. The main complaint associated with candida infection is discomfort and itching from the rash.
Because most people have candida living naturally on their skin, the infection is not usually contagious. Your physician will most likely diagnose a candida infection by viewing the location of the rash and appearance of your skin. If your physician wants to confirm the candida infection diagnosis, he or she can take a swab of the affected area and send it to a laboratory.
Because poor blood sugar control can contribute to candida infections, maintaining optimal blood sugar levels can help. Your physician may recommend using an antifungal cream or powder applied to your skin to reduce candida’s spread. Cutaneous candidiasis is the medical term for a yeast infection of the skin caused by the Candida species of yeasts. The skin has defenses against Candida species of yeasts but for various reasons this can be compromised.

Skin candidiasis is not contagious and it is uncommon for the infection to spread to close contacts in the same way as dermatophyte (ringworm) skin fungal infections.
Avoid using very tight clothing, especially undergarments that make contact with skin creases.
Candidiasis between the fingers can appear moist, white in color, and peeling, and can be painful and irritating. However, if a person who has a weakened immune system touches the candida infection, he or she may become infected.
These infections are usually superficial meaning that it does not extend deeper than the outermost layers of the skin. Of this species, it is Candida albicans that is usually responsible for most human yeast infections, be it within the vagina, mouth or skin. Skin candidiasis can affect any person of any age but it often tends to be more common in newborns and the elderly.
Candida albicans is the most common species involved in human infections but other Candida species may also be involved at times such as Candida glabrata, Candida guilliermondii, Candida parapsilosis and Candida tropicalis. Often these yeasts require some irritation or break in the skin in order to establish an infection. However, antibacterial soaps should not be used daily for bathing as it can dry the skin and disrupt the surface microbes that may promote tears in the skin and increase the likelihood of yeast overgrowths. Even minor chaffing can worsen over time and lead to breaks in the skin which then become infected with yeasts. Antifungal drying powders may be a better option if there is a history of fungal skin infections.
While most candidiasis cases can be treated with improved hygiene, fungal infections can be very dangerous for those with weak immune systems. Most tests only detect the presence of fungus, however, and may not definitively identify candidiasis.

However, if your candida infection is located inside your body, such as your throat, mouth, or vagina, you may need to take oral medication.
Most of these infections are caused by a type of fungus known as dermatophytes which have specialized enzymes to digest human skin. While skin candidiasis can occur anywhere on the skin, it tends to arise at the folds of the body especially where the area is warm and moist. The fecal particles can irritate the skin and lead to dermatitis which can then become infected with yeasts. It is not considered as part of the natural skin microbes (normal skin flora) but does colonize the skin surface every now and then. Irritation of the skin due to friction caused by the diapers as well as the moistness from urine and stool are precipitating factors. It may also require a topical corticosteroid to reduce inflammation and assist with healing of the skin. However, in individuals with severe weakening of the immune system the infection can spread deeper beyond the skin.
It is important to other that other species apart from Candida may be involved in skin yeast infections.
Detergents and disinfectants that make contact with the skin in the area further contribute to the likelihood of candidal diaper dermatitis. These type of fungi are usually associated with vaginal and mouth thrush but sometimes the skin may also be infected.
