Many people these days are following alkaline diets to improve their health, but the fact is that they are not appropriate for everyone.
Candida Albicans is an opportunistic microorganism that can actually survive in a wide range of pH levels, either acid or alkaline. Take the example of a healthy person who eats a balanced diet and has not taken antibiotics recently. You should also know that the Candida itself is actively trying to make its environment more alkaline. The Candida yeast cells can only turn into their fungal form (and start to cause Candida symptoms) when the pH in your gut becomes neutral or slightly alkaline. There are some simple tips that you can follow to regulate the pH in your intestines and prevent a Candida overgrowth. Cutting fruit from your diet will not only prevent all that fructose from feeding a Candida overgrowth. If you're looking for a more comprehensive Candida treatment plan, check out Lisa Richards' new program, the Ultimate Candida Diet. Lisa's plan is based on the latest research into Candida, and contains everything you need to know to beat your Candida overgrowth.
My naturopath prescribed an anti-candida diet, probiotics, and anti-fungals for my eczema, but after three months, the rash started getting worse. Also, one thing I found that no matter what diet I did, stress is what really kept my candida thriving, and I think sometimes when we’re stressing out too much about our diets, we actually just make it worse. Maintaining the correct pH in your gut is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your Candida overgrowth.
You may have read in various places that your body needs to be more alkaline or acidic, but the fact is that this is over-simplifying a very complicated topic. Candida not only prefer an alkaline (or less acidic) environment; it actually acts to further reduce the acidity of your intestines. There is one more reason for your reduced gut acidity that’s not the result of your diet or anything else that you’ve done. Diet is an incredibly important part of any Candida treatment plan, and you should make probiotic foods like kefir and yogurt a part of your daily routine. For a more comprehensive look at how pH affects Candida overgrowth, take a look at my Ultimate Candida Diet treatment plan. Lisa Richards is an expert in digestive health and the author of the Ultimate Candida Diet program. Lisa's approach to beating Candida involves probiotics, natural antifungals and a low sugar diet.
For example, while your blood pH should be almost exactly 7.4 (slightly alkaline), your stomach and intestines need to be much more acidic.
This person’s intestines will be slightly acidic overall, meaning that most of the Candida Albicans in her intestines will be in the form of a relatively harmless yeast.
Again, it comes back to the three central themes of my Candida treatment plan – diet, probiotics and antifungals. This acid is a great defense against pathogens and it prevents Candida from switching to its fungal form. In my Candida treatment plan I share comprehensive lists of foods to eat and foods to avoid, as well as lots of advice on when and how to take your probiotics and antifungals.
Family is uninterested in any dietary changes away from their beloved SAD, so I thought the greens addition might work well without my buying large amounts of stuff no one else will eat.

It’s a great foundation for reclaiming health over Candida overgrowth and the damage it causes in our bodies. If you are eating a balanced diet or following a Candida treatment plan, I would not recommend alkaline water. The length of treatment all depends on how serious the case of Candida is and how aggressive you are in treating it. Some naturopaths believe that types A and AB have lower stomach acid and so would be more susceptible to a Candida overgrowth, as well as less able to digest meat.
Your body’s typical pH reading should be 7.4 (slightly alkaline), but there are very good reasons why you need to actually make your gut more acidic to kill the Candida yeast. The Candida yeast likes an alkaline environment, which is often brought about by a course of antibiotics or an excessively alkaline diet.
One of Candida’s byproducts is ammonia, an alkaline gas that forms when the Candida Albicans yeast ferments sugar in your intestine.
A 2001 study (click here to read) found that “both capric and lauric acids are active in killing Candida Albicans and may therefore be useful for treatment of infections caused by that pathogen”. One of the reasons that probiotics are so effective in treating Candida is that they produce small amounts of lactic and acetic acid.
Perhaps the major cause of Candida overgrowth is antibiotics, which are sadly over-prescribed these days. Most fruits are very alkaline, so eating too much of these is one route to excess alkalinity in the stomach. Its a fact that stomach acidity actually declines with age, so as we get older we become more susceptible to Candida overgrowth.
You can take vitamin C in quite large quantities and its a very useful complement to a Candida treatment plan.
She writes regular posts on the causes, symptoms and treatment of Candida, and has helped thousands of Candida sufferers recover from their condition.
Using the right combination of these three elements is the best way to overcome a Candida overgrowth. The yeast form of Candida Albicans survives most easily in an acidic environment, but when the environment becomes more alkaline, it is able to switch to its fungal form. The alkaline supplements that many dieters use (baking soda for example) can quickly transform the pH of your gut and make it far too alkaline. I didn’t have full control over the Candida until I began eating a diet that is meant to raise the pH of my body that was very acidic. I think the idea is to avoid over-exercising, reduce emotional stress and basically give your adrenals a break, then your body is better prepared to cope with the candida. 2 months is the best case and is certainly possible but, as I mention in the book, many Candida sufferers do need longer.
But personally, I think making the right diet and lifestyle choices are much more important, and blood type is less of a factor. They claim that an alkalizing diet will prevent fatigue, help you lose weight, increase your bone strength and even prevent cancer.
Ammonia increases the alkalinity of your digestive tract, and has even been found to promote the growth of other yeasts. Additionally, one of the most popular and effective antifungals for Candida overgrowth is actually caprylic acid. This helps to rebalance the pH in your intestine and restore the acidity that is needed to curb the Candida overgrowth.

When the antibiotics kill the good bacteria in your gut, they’re not just reducing competition for the Candida yeast.
There is another reason to be careful with your fruit intake of course – fruits contain large amounts of sugar that feed your Candida overgrowth.
If you do need to go on a course of antibiotics, taking probiotic supplements at the same time will help you maintain the balance of your gut flora and prevent your stomach from becoming too alkaline. In fact, if you are suffering from Candida then an excessively alkaline diet is almost certain to make your overgrowth worse. You are much more likely to experience the symptoms of a Candida overgrowth if you have a higher proportion of the fungal Candida. So making your intestines more alkaline may have the consequence of encouraging more of the fungal Candida.
Eating too many alkaline (or alkalizing) foods can increase the pH in your gut and lead to a Candida overgrowth.
And as I mentioned, Candida Albicans is adept at changing its own environment to make it less acidic.
However there are very few scientific studies backing up these diets, and increasing your blood pH to 7.45 or above can even be dangerous.
Your digestive system has evolved with a naturally acidic environment that protects us against pathogens like Candida, so when you begin your Candida treatment plan you need to maintain that acidity. In fact one of the most common reasons that a Candida overgrowth happens is that a course of antibiotics has killed the acid-producing bacteria in your stomach, thus making the environment too alkaline and allowing the Candida to thrive. If you’re taking alkaline waters it is also recommended that you stop until you have beaten your Candida overgrowth.
Consult your doctor or health professional before starting a treatment or making any changes to your diet. The most alkalizing foods tend to be fruits, which are also high in sugars and should definitely be avoided on a Candida diet. It is possible to eat a diet that is simply geared for battling Candida overgrowth, but there is a risk that it will allow acid buildup and never truly win the battle. We see this in pH levels – your blood needs to be slightly alkaline, whereas your digestive system needs stomach acids to function correctly.
The same study showed that by alkalizing its environment, Candida triggers a switch to its pathogenic, hyphal form, which is the form that causes Leaky Gut Syndrome.
Without these bacteria, the pH of her intestines quickly rises and becomes neutral or even alkaline. My body had been ravaged by fungus and my immune system was extremely weak until I started strictly eating foods that are alkaline, almost 90% of my diet.
Most Candida sufferers actually need to increase the acidity in their intestines to help fight off the infestation. What really matters for Candida sufferers though, is that an alkaline environment in your intestines is exactly what your Candida overgrowth needs. When they are killed by the antibiotics, your gut becomes less acidic, more alkaline, and a perfect environment for Candida to grow and take over your gut. Now, the Candida yeast can morph into its fungal form, and the symptoms of a Candida overgrowth rapidly appear.
