INTRO PLAYERS COACHES OPPONENTS REVIEW RECORDS STAFF HISTORY Page 123 The Don Christopher Faros Scholarship fund was established in memory of a football alumnus who was killed in a plane crash in December 1983. Chris Faros, a 1973 MWSU graduate, was the captain of the Missouri Western football team during its inaugural season in 1970. He was a four-year letter winner who gained All-District 16 honors after both his junior and senior seasons. Faros was well respected by his teammates for his dedication and determination, and was a leader both on and off the field. Faros was successful in fulfilling his ambitions of coaching football on the major college level. He was an assistant coach at both Colorado State University and Drake University, and held the position of offensive coordinator at Memphis State University when tragedy struck. He was among the initial group of inductees selected for the Missouri Western Athletics Hall of Fame in the spring of 1990. Last season, for the first time ever two football players earned the award. Senior defensive end David Bass and senior running back Michael Hill were named the recipients of the Chris Faros Award. Both the players exemplified what Faros’ dedication was like, being a team leader on and off the field. Bass was a four-year starter for the Griffons on the defensive line. He was a valuable asset for the Griffons, setting record for most career sacks (40.5) and tackles for a loss (56). During his career he played in and started 50 games. During his senior season he was named to numerous All-America teams as well as being the first Griffon to be a finalist for the Gene Upshaw Award, which is given to the top lineman in Division II. As a senior he started all 14 games, accumulating a season best 61 tackles with 36 being solo and 25 assisted. He had 16 tackles for a loss, 11.5 sacks, nine pass defended, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and two interceptions with one returned 55 yards for a touchdown. He became the fourth Missouri Western player drafted when the Oakland Raiders selected him in the 7th round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Hill was a four-year letter winner for the Griffons. He was a valuable asset on the offensive side of the ball being named to several All-America teams and earning Offensive Player of the Year by numerous organizations, including the MIAA. During his career he played in 50 games with 30 starts. He set the career record for rushing yards (4,969), carries (928) and rushing touchdowns (35). He also set the single season record for rushing (2,168) and carries (311). He finished second for the Harlon Hill Trophy, which is given to the top football player in the nation. He was signed as a free agent by the San Diego Chargers. Since its inception, the Chris Faros Scholarship Fund has provided a great postgraduate opportunity for former football players. The fund is coordinated by friends and teammates of Chris Faros, including Rodney Saunders, Dave Hedrick, Joe Vigliaturo and Gold Coat Club President Zack Workman.
