No question who the leader in the special teams clubhouse is this season for MWSU. Punter Scott Groner is coming off a first team All-MIAA season and is receiving preseason All-American accolades. The Australian enters his fourth season handling the punting duties for the Griffons and has made a habit of flipping the field with booming punts and athletic plays. John Schmeimeier returns along with Taylor Anderson. Schmiemeier was 9-15 kicking field goals and 52-54 on extra points taking over for the injured Anderson. In 2012, Anderson was 12-19 on three point tries as the Griffons primary field goal kicker. The two will battle it out for the spot in 2014. The Griffons top three kick returners from 2013 return, including Dominic Thomas who returned a kick 96 yards for a touchdown last year. Josh Walker averaged close to 25 yards per kick return a season ago and carried four punts for 31 yards. Special teams have never been overlooked on Jerry Partridge-coached teams. The Griffons have been known for solid special teams units under Coach Partridge, including 2012 All-America selection and current St. Louis Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein. #MISSOURIWESTERNWINS Page 37
