POSTSEASON RECORDS REVIEW OPPONENTS MEAC PIRATES COACHES PREVIEW HAMPTON pirate asistant coaches Bernard Clark Defensive Coordinator Bernard Clark Jr. returns to the Hampton University football program to again serve as defensive coordinator under head coach Donovan Rose, bringing a wealth of collegiate and professional football experience. Clark originally served as the Pirates’ defensive coordinator in 2009. That season, the Pirates were third in the MEAC in both scoring defense (19.4 ppg) and total defense (278.1 ypg), while also ranking second in the conference in rushing defense – holding opponents to just 117.0 yards per game on the ground. The Pirates were also second in the MEAC with 157 sacks in 2009. Linebacker Julio Sanchez led the Pirates and was second in the MEAC that season with 98 tackles, while linebacker Brandon Peguese led the MEAC that season in both sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (16.0). Sanchez was a First Team All-MEAC selection in 2009, while Peguese earned Second Team All-MEAC honors. Clark played his collegiate ball at the University of Miami, where he starred as a linebacker in 1985-89. After his career with the Hurricanes, where he won national championships in 1987 and 1989, Clark was drafted in the third round by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1990, and he would play three seasons in the NFL. From there, Clark played with the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League in 1994 and 1996. Clark got his coaching start at James Madison University, where in 1998 and 1999 he served as the defensive ends coach. He would serve as linebackers and special teams coach for Liberty University from 2000-03, before joining Florida International in 2004 and 2005 as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. After spending 2006 at South Florida as a defensive line coach, Clark returned to Florida International for the 2007 and 2008 seasons to coach the defensive line. Clark’s defensive line helped the South Florida defense rank 14th in the country in sacks per game, 21st in scoring defense and 26th in total defense. South Florida finished the season with a 24-7 win against East Carolina in the Papa- Johns.com Bowl, tying a school record with nine wins. In his first stint at Florida International, Clark worked to improve a defensive unit that allowed 478 yards per game against a I-AA schedule in 2004 to one that gave up 375 yards per game against a I-A schedule in 2005. Under Clark’s guidance, the Golden Panthers tied an NCAA record with four interceptions returned against Florida Atlantic in 2005. Clark is a native of Tampa, Fla. and is married to Tammy Clark.
