Albany State 0 0 7 0 7 Hampton 13 7 13 0 33 The Pirates rushes for more yards and scored more points in the first quarter than Albany State had allows in an entire game during the season, setting the tone for Hampton’s first-ever playoff win – a 33-7 defeat in front of the home crown at Armstrong Stadium. The Pirates used scoring drives of 10 plays and one play to take a 13-0 lead in the first quarter, rushing for 73 yards and passing for 37 more. Entering the contest, the Golden Rams were only giving up 59 rushing yards and 8.2 points a game. Hampton had 24 first downs, rushing for 149 yards, passed for 238 more and scored more points (33) than Albany State had given up at any point during the regular season. Albany State trailed 20-7 after scoring on the first possession of the second half, but when Johann Fuller recovered a fumble and ran it back 41 yards for the score, Hampton pulled ahead 27-7 and dashed any hopes of a Golden Rams comeback. 1993 Playofs – Quarterfinals North Alabama 45, Hampton 20 Nov. 27, Braly Stadium, Florence, Ala. Hampton 14 0 9 0 20 North Alabama 21 7 14 3 45 Cody Gross, Brian Satterfield and Tyrone Rush each ran for over 100 yards as the Lions outlasted the Pirates in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs, 45-20. It was the second straight year North Alabama had eliminated Hampton. The Lions scored the first two touchdowns, before Malcolm Benson put the Pirates on the board with a two-yard run. North Alabama posted the only score of the second quarter before holding off a Pirate surge with two goal-line stands to protect a 28-14 halftime lead. North Alabama scored again in the third quarter, but this time Hampton answered when Kevin White ran the ensuring kickoff back 80 yards for a score. That made the score 35-20, but North Alabama would seal the deal on the next possession, when Gross scored from two yards out. Jamie Stoddard later added a 23-yard field goal. Matt Montgomery went 16-for-40 passing for the Pirates, compiling 204 yards and a touchdown, but Hampton was held to just 110 rushing yards, their lowest output of the season. 1997 Playofs – First Round Youngstown State 28, Hampton 13 Nov. 29, Arnold D. Stambaugh Stadium, Youngstown, Ohio Hampton 0 0 7 6 13 Youngstown 0 21 7 0 28 Hampton’s first-ever NCAA Division I-AA playoff game was off to a rough start when Youngstown State, led by current Ohio State head coach Jim Tressell, scored 14 points on two Pirate turnovers and held a 21-0 lead at the half en route to a 28-13 first-round win. Hampton 13 9 0 6 28 Bloomsburg 7 10 0 21 38 Coming in as the Pirates’ leading rusher, Carl Painter put Hampton on the board early with an 80-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Painter would gain just 21 yards after that, but his impact was felt in other ways in a 38-28 loss to Bloomsburg. The Huskies answered quickly, thanks to quarterback Jay DeDea’s five-yard touchdown toss to Joe David in the back of the end zone. Pirates signal-caller Marco Stacy gave his team back the lead with a 77-yard strike to Darryl Skinner. Hampton missed the extra point, but held a 13-7 lead after the first quarter. The Huskies took a 14-13 lead early in the second quarter when Tom Martin scampered four yards into the end zone. Hampton then scored the next nine points, behind a Craig Barber 33-yard field goal and Painter’s 77-yard touchdown reception. Bloomsburg added a field goal of its own before the half to cut Hampton’s lead to 22-17. Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter, but the Huskies seized control by scoring on three consecutive drives in the fourth, two of which were capped by touchdown runs from Martin. Stacy added a touchdown pass to Todd Gallaird late, but the Pirates were too late in the comeback attempt. Martin ran 40 times for 203 yards and three touchdowns to help the Huskies advance. Stacy was just 5-for-14 passing, but he finished with 232 yards and two long touchdown passes. 1992 Playofs – First Round North Alabama 33, Hampton 21 Nov. 21, Armstrong Stadium, Hampton, Va. North Alabama 6 14 0 13 33 Hampton 0 0 7 14 21 North Alabama’s top rusher, Tyrone Rush, broke the game open early, as he scampered in from 20 yards with 9:46 left in the first quarter. The rushing attack struck again in the second quarter, thanks to an option set that drove 90 yards in 12 plays – culminating in a 27-yard scoring run from quarterback Cody Gross in North Alabama’s 33-21 win in Armstrong Stadium. North Alabama scored one more before the half on a one-yard run by Brian Satterfield to let the team go into the locker room up 20-0. The Pirates drove 86 yards on seven plays late in the third quarter, finally getting on the board when quarterback Matt Montgomery found Craig Rainey for a five-yard strike. Gross then trotted in for a one-yard score in the fourth quarter to give North Alabama its fourth score of the game and a 27-7 lead. Montgomery used a number of short passes to move the ball, setting up a one-yard touchdown run from Todd Harvey. The Pirates then recovered a losses ball on the ensuing kickoff on the North Alabama 35-yard line. Montgomery then found Rainey again for a oneyard score to trim North Alabama’s lead to 27-21 with 8:21 left to play. North Alabama returned to the ground game, though, as Rush and Satterfield ate the clock with tough short-yardage plays, and Gross capped the victory with a two-yard keeper with 3:38 to play. Hampton’s comeback fell short when North Alabama intercepted Montgomery with 1:58 remaining. 1993 Playofs – First Round run by quarterback Roy Johnson. Charles Jackson added a 13-yard score to trim the Penguins’ lead to 28-13. Hampton racked up 357 yards of total offense to Youngstown State’s 290, but turned the ball over six times with four fumbles and two interceptions to seal the Pirates’ fate. Jackson ran for 98 yards and a score for Hampton, while Johnson completed 13 of 26 passes for 152yards. Deon Hunt led the Pirates with 11 tackles. 1998 Playofs – First Round Connecticut 42, Hampton 34 Nov. 28, Memorial Stadium, Storrs, Conn. Hampton 7 10 3 13 34 Connecticut 7 14 7 14 42 This playoff matchup turned into a shootout, as both teams put up more than 400 yards of total offense. The Pirates pounded out 227 yards on the ground, led by Montrell Coley’s 87 yards and two touchdowns – including a 40-yard touchdown on the Pirates’ first possession. Still, Connecticut held on for the 42-34 win. The Huskies relied mostly on their air attack, as quarterback Shane Stafford threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns to four different receivers. Down 21-17 at the half, Hampton rallied to tie the game at 28 on a two-yard run by Mike Jones early in the fourth quarter.
