B R O N C O S 2012 season in review 41 8 FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Fayetteville State running back Colon Bailey, Jr. (Jr., Manteo, NC) eclipsed the 1,000- yard rushing barrier at Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium as the Broncos suffered a 41-8 defeat to the second-ranked Winston-Salem State Rams. FSU ends its season with a 2-8 overall record and 1-6 mark in the league. The Rams remain unbeaten at 10-0 and 7-0 in the CIAA. It was Senior Day for Broncos, who honored its five seniors prior to the contest. Honored were: wide receiver Jamere Pugh, quarterback Andreas Hudson, linebacker Bryce Williams, offensive lineman William Hunt and tight end Xavier Molina-Williams. Bailey, Jr. led the FSU offense with 78 yards rushing on 23 carries. He averaged 3.4 yards per carry and had a long run of 14 yards. Freshman quarterback Derek Bryant (Carrboro, NC) passed for 80 yards on 10-of-16 attempts in his first start of the season. Ricardo White (So., Monroe, NC) had a team-high three catches for 34 yards. Bryce Williams (Sr., St. Petersburg, FL) collected 12 tackles (five solo, seven assisted). Free safety Michael Johnson (So., Raleigh, NC) had ten tackles (six solo, four assisted) and recorded his fourth interception of the season. The Fayetteville State defense forced the Rams, who will face Elizabeth City State next week in the CIAA Championship Game, into three first-half turnovers and went into halftime, tied 6-6. The Rams managed just 152 yards of offense in the first half while quarterback Kameron Smith threw two interceptions and completed just five passes for 78 yards on 14 attempts. Colon Bailey, Jr. surpassed the 1,000-yard plateau on a five-yard run in the second quarter with FSU trailing 6-3. He finishes the season with 1,015 yards and 10 touchdowns on 178 carries. The 6-0, 200-pound running back averaged 101.5 yards per game this season and averaged 5.7 yards per carry. His ten rushing touchdowns are the most since Richard Medlin in 2008. Only three other FSU running backs, including Medlin, have tallied 10 or more touchdowns in a season. Clifton Davis had 17 touchdowns in 1993 and DeAngelo Bridgers rushed for 11 in 2002. Colon becomes the first running back since Davis in 1994 to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season, and is the third player in program history to accomplish the feat. Davis had 1,063 yards on the ground in 1994, which followed a 1,591-yard campaign in 1993. James Godwin (1974-75) also ran for over 1,000 yards in a season for the Broncos; he had 1,079 yards in 1974 and 1,100 in 1975.
