Alma Mater: Carson-Newman, ‘14 Season: 1st Season MIKE SEALE Former Carson-Newman volleyball player Kirby Ellis has been named an assistant coach for head coach Dan Ahiers’s volleyball team. Ellis battled injuries during her playing career as she was able to play in just three sets over two seasons, but she looks forward to being on the sideline once again. “I really feel it’s like I never left,” Ellis said Tuesday afternoon. “I loved being an Eagle and I get to be an Eagle again. I’m really excited to con-tinue being an Eagle from a different perspective.” The Bakersfield, Calif. native will embrace several duties this upcoming season and is eager to learn from Ahiers and be willing to assist in any way possible. Ellis said one challenge she may face is as a vocal leader. “I have the ten-dency to lead by example. I will want to get out on the court with them. I will have to do a lot of growing by showing and leading.” She spent time with the team in the spring watching the development of a group that looks primed for a big season. “So far what I’ve seen is awesome,” Ellis said of what she has seen from this year’s team. “I have been overwhelmed at how they are hard work-ers, but they are so passionate about each other, about their relation-ships together and also about the sport.” Ellis thinks that the momentum and enthusiasm will carry into the season and onto the court during matches. Among numerous positions, Ellis has been an active leader in the com-munity volunteering for such projects as Operation InAsMuch, the Cin-derella Project, the Life Outreach Center and the Providence Church. On top of being a 4.0 student, Ellis earned a bachelor’s degree in Linguistics with a concentration in Spanish, a language that she has worked as a translator. She was a nominee for the NCAA Scholar-Athlete in 2012, an Eagle Scholar in 2013 and a member of the Alpha Chi Honor’s Society. Title: Volunteer Assistant Director of Alumni Relations Hometown: Atlanta, Ga. Alma Mater: Carson-Newman, ‘14 Season: 1st Season Former Carson-Newman Eagle volleyball player Emily Schultz has been named Director of Alumni Relations and Volunteer Assistant Coach by Carson-Newman head coach Dan Ahiers. The Atlanta, Ga. native has been busy with her responsibilities thus far as she has helped to organize an alumni event on August 30 following a scrimmage against Lee University. On top of an alumni match, the players will host a barbeque. “As Director of Alumni Relations,” Schultz explained of her duties. “I will be the liaison between the program and the alumni. It’s good to see that former players want to come back and see their former teammates as well as play our girls right now.” After transferring from the College of Charleston for her junior season, Schultz became one of the top options at the net. She finished just shy of 400 kills for her career including 213 in 2013 to put herself with the second-best tally on the squad. Schultz will now turnaround and coach several of her former teammates. “I think it’s going to be tough sometimes,” the former right side hitter said of coaching her former teammates. “I’m not sure if they will take me seriously, but it’s a process. I’m here to learn.” Schultz has a list of experience on the coaching side of the bench. She was a camp coach during each of her four seasons coaching middle school and high school talent at the College of Charleston and Carson-Newman. The lone senior from 2013 spent parts of seven years as a volunteer coach at her high school, St. Pius X, in Atlanta. Most recently, Schultz was the head coach of a travelling club team for 16-year-olds where she planned and executed practices in leading a new program based out of Jefferson City, Tenn. Schultz is finishing her degree in Business Administration at Carson-Newman this fall and has really enjoyed seeing the new version of the Eagles go through practice. “I’m really impressed with their athleticism,” Schultz said of her impressions on this year’s club. “I told them earlier today ‘you can’t really coach athleticism and the drive to want to win and work harder’. They all look like they are so excited to be back.”
