FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY Florida A&M 2015-16 Season Preview The FAMU Rattler Women’s Basketball team will be on a mission in 2015-16 – to return to the elite level in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and capture the program’s first league title and NCAA Tournament berth since 1999. Head coach LeDawn Gibson begins her eighth season at the helm of the FAMU Women’s program and she and her staff have worked tirelessly in the offseason on recruiting and devising strategic plans to life the club back to its’ accustomed place among the MEAC’s top clubs. This year’s team will be a blend of seven returning veterans and eight newcomers, featuring six junior college transfers and two true freshmen, who are working to improve on last season’s 8-21 finish. Headlining the seven returning veterans is senior Olivia Antilla, a 6-0 forward from Minneapolis, Minm., who led the club in scoring (13.3 ppg) and three-pointers made (52), while pulling down 4.8 rebounds per game. Junior guard Kenya Dixon, a 5-9 native of Baton Rouge, La., missed most of the year with a knee injury, after averaging 10.0 points and 4.6 rebounds in the team’s first eight games returns, as does Khaderja Young, a 5-8 senior guard from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who finished with a 10.0 scoring touch, coupled a team-high 5.1 rebounding average, to go with 95 assists and 81 steals. Texas sophomore guard Dawn King, a 5-9 performer from Waxahachie, earned MEAC Rookie of the Week honors last December, and finished her freshman campaign averaging 7.9 points per game and 2.4 rebounds, with 31 assists and 26 steals. Shalaunda Burney-Robinson, a 6-4 sophomore center from Palmdale, Calif., averaged 2.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game in limited playing time, and should vie for a starting role in the pivot this year. Rounding out the returning seven are senior guard Alicia Jones (4.6 ppg, 2.2 rbs in 27 games), a 5-10 native of Phoenix, Ariz., and Alicia McCray (1.5 rbs in two games), a 5-11 junior forward from West Palm Beach, Fla. Eight newcomers will added depth and talent to the FAMU Women’s squad, with six players hailing from the junior college ranks. Fresh faces in the backcourt will be Cedricka Sweeting, a 5-5 native of Hollywood, Florida; Jasmine Robertson, a 5-6 performer from Conyers, Ga.; Florence Ouattara, a 5-10 guard from Tiassale, Ivory Coast; and Victoria Nguyen, a 5-5 native of Winshester, Mass., while front court imports feature6-0 forward Mariah Reynolds from Miami, Fla., and Jessica Njoku, a 6-2 forward from Gardena, Calif.
