Prior to that season, the Lions’ only other postseason ad-vancement was the NAIA national championship year of 1972. The 1993 Lions, then coached by Jon Lantz, won the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship with a 9-0 record and finished the regular season 9-0-1, a 14-14 tie with Central Arkansas the only blemish on an otherwise perfect record. Missouri Southern, ranked sixth nationally in the final regular season NCAA Division II poll, advanced to the NCAA playoffs and hosted 12th-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato (9-2) in the opening round at Fred Hughes Stadium on the MSSU campus. Southern and Mankato, appeared even going into the contest. Missouri Southern, led by All-American end Richard Jordan and linebacker Ron Burton, seemed to have a slight edge on defense. The Lions had surrendered fewer yards and fewer points than the Mavericks. Mankato, led by quarterback Jamie Pass and running back Eric Skow, had a statistical advantage on offense. The Mavericks averaged 325 yards a game to 255 by the Lions and had a 37-32 edge in points scored. The Mavericks before an estimated crowd of 3,500, took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and never trailed in ousting the Lions 34-13. Southern’s dynamic duo of quarterback Matt Cook and Rod Smith combined for both Southern scores. Cook hit Smith with a 51-yard scoring strike in the second quarter and scored on a 4-yard run in the third to pull the Lions within four points, 17-13. But Mankato tacked on 17 fourth-quarter points to put the game away. Pass threw for 399 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Albert Bland had a big game for the Lions, finishing with 94 yards rushing on 22 carries. Linebackers Burton and Melvin Monet combined for 25 stops, including four for 25 yards in losses. Jordan added 13 tackles, including two for minus eight yards. Jordan, Monet and cornerback Tyrone Russell each had six solo stops. Missouri Southern’s other venture into the postseason had a more rewarding outcome. The 1972 Lions, coached by Jim Frazier, capped the school’s only perfect season by defeating Northwestern College of Iowa 21-14 at Junge Field in Joplin for the NAIA Division II national championship. Missouri Southern, finishing its season 12-0, had defeated Doane College of Nebraska, 24-6, in the semifinal round. Southern’s 10-0 regular-season record included a 7-0 victory at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Southern and Northwestern entered the title game statistically even. Both teams were averaging 29 points a game. The Lions had permitted only 7.2 points defensively while the Northwestern Red Raiders were surrendering only 9.7 points a game. Missouri Southern received a strong performance from tailback Terry Starks in the title game. The big junior had 114 yards rushing on only 13 carries. Freshman Lydell Williams added 48 yards as the Lions had a 158-82 edge on the ground. Quarterback Ray Harding of the Lions threw for 103 yards, including a 58-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Kerry Anders. Southern trailed 7-0 at the half but Roger Hall blocked a Northwestern punt and Randy Hocker recovered in the end zone at the outset of the third period. Max Mourglia’s placement was perfect to tie the score. The Lions then scored twice in the fourth period. After Northwestern had regained the lead at 14-7, the Lions scored on the Harding-to-Anders completion. The Lions went for two points but Harding’s pass was intercepted. The Lions moved in front on Northwestern’s next possession as Sam Kealoha recovered a fumble in the end zone. Starks ran for the two-point conversion and the Lions made the 21-14 score stand up the rest of the way. Linebacker Barry Korner keyed the Southern defense with 15 tackles, including nine solos. Jack Duda and Jeff Wolverton had interceptions and Larry Cameron and Kealoha had fumble recoveries. PLAYOFF HISTORY
