December 16, 2012 @ 9:15 am If you need to setup an environment where you plan on exporting your content from the environment to a production system as a whole (possibly via MySQL dumps and restores and FTP of theme files and such), then you should set up the development site as if it was the production site. This means keeping the URL structure intact across both, as well as using HOSTS file entries to point the production domain at your localhost. This ensures the integrity of your data and files, so that you don't have to make any changes to export the data and import it on the production site. All you then have to do to view production or development site is to edit your HOSTS file accordingly. There's other ways to do this of course, such as running a local DNS server that you can control. Whatever works best for you.
