The exhibition will be held September 16 – November 22, 2011, at the Messler Gallery at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine.
Selected entries will get mention on the Fine Woodworking website while Top Honors winners will have their work featured in the Fine Woodworking Readers Gallery.

Ken Carreras of Stockton Springs, Maine, examines a wooden lock at the Maine Prison Store, Friday, Nov. THOMASTON, Maine (AP) — Ken and Judy Carreras got up before sunrise and drove an hour to find their Black Friday treasure — an acorn-shaped birdfeeder crafted by an inmate at Maine State Prison.
Friday’s sale at the Thomaston showroom, located four miles from Maine State Prison in Warren, resembled a traditional Black Friday sale in many ways.


A life-sized carving made of Maine basswood is displayed in the front window of the Maine Prison Store, Friday, Nov. The Thomaston showroom attracted dozens of cars full of patrons in its first hour as buyers ogled ornamental wooden ball-and-chain sets and priced out porch furniture. Maine Prison Industries manager Ken Lindsey said sales from the work program total more than $1 million per year. Maine prisoners have made handicrafts for sale since the early 1800s, starting with sleighs and hearses, Lindsey said. Most importantly, Tommy met and chatted with more than a few young woodworkers, encouraging them in their woodworking pursuits and passion.

Photo courtesy of Woodcraft.While in Ohio for the WIA, Tommy found time to check out the grand opening of a new Woodcraft store in Cincinnati. Today, some 130 inmates a year participate in the program at the Maine State Prison, a medium- and maximum-security facility that houses 900 offenders. Louis area woodworkers should head over to the Woodworking Show taking place there this weekend at the Gateway Center in Collinsville, IL, to meet Tommy and hear his presentation on Building Better Furniture.


As our friend Frank Byers over at Woodcraft tells, Tommy demonstrated chisel sharpening and fielded questions on project building from the numerous onlookers. At WoodExpo 2011 he’ll be demonstrating techniques and participating in a few speaking sessions.
A similar sale took place at the Maine Prison Industries outlet store in Windham, which cut prices 30 percent. The Maine prison system has two stores that sell the handicrafts of inmates, everything from cutting boards to Adirondack chairs. As the 2005 recipient of the Cartouche Award bestowed by the Society of American Period Furniture Makers, Philip established himself as a Master Craftsmen within the field.
