Oil Based Stain For Treated Wood,Woodworker S Supply,Patio Gazebo Plans - Easy Way

Just because you used pressure-treated lumber doesn't mean your outdoor project has to stay green. The kind of stain you put on your deck and when you apply it depend on the type and condition of your treated wood. Treated wood containing water repellent: Manufacturers sometimes add a water repellent to their lumber. Kiln-dried after treatment: Dry treated wood is ideal because you can confidently stain it right away with either oil- or water-based exterior stains. Use an oil-based, semi-transparent exterior stain if you can't determine how your lumber was treated or what its moisture content is. If you're unsure of the type and condition of the wood, have its moisture content tested by the dealer (less than 12 percent is ideal) and use an oil-based, semi-transparent exterior stain. There's a myth that wood should "weather" untreated for several months before being treated. A little household bleach mixed 50-50 with water is great for killing mildew that may grow on the deck after you refinish.
Solid color stain will help extend the life of an older deck that is starting to crack and check. Verify that the sealer has a few key properties: 1) waterproofs, 2) stops the growth of mold, mildew and fungi, 3) protects the wood from wood-destroying insects.

Pressure-treated wood may contain arsenic, so EXTREME caution should be used when sanding it. A deck that does not get a lot of sunlight is more likely to have mildew staining and green moss. The sealant may drip between the decking boards, so use tarps beneath the deck to avoid staining a cement pad. If the deck is near a chlorinated swimming pool, check your selection of stains and oils because the chlorine vapors can cause some oils to become opaque. Although the treated wood doesn't need to be protected against rot, staining it will help reduce surface cracking.
To recognize it, look for a tag or stamp that says KDAT (kiln-dried after treatment) or ADAT (air-dried after treatment). Solid-color stains and paints don't usually work as well on the deck floor, because they can peel and are difficult to maintain.
Water based sealers tend to stay on the surface where oil based are quickly absorbed into the wood. If your deck is getting some mildew or green moss, try a small spot to check for color changes. Apply one coat of solid stain, let the deck weather for a year and then apply another coat.

You can do this by applying oil then using a sanding block to run over the area with fine grade sanding paper. If the water is absorbed into the wood it has little or no seal and will decay unless treated.
You should be able to find stains specifically designed for treated wood decks at most home centers. The best method for applying the material is with a brush or a paint pad on a long handle, available at any hardware store. Let this lumber dry out (from a few weeks to six months, depending on the weather and the condition of the lumber) before applying any stain.
Thompson's Water Seal Advanced Wood Protectors can be applied to damp lumber, so it's possible to clean and waterproof your deck in one day. Some products can be applied immediately to new pressure treated lumber -- check the label.
Read the directions on the product you're using for temperature and weather guidelines, drying times, etc., and follow them!
