ScienceDaily – Women who have higher levels of the appetite-controlling hormone leptin have fewer symptoms of depression, and this apparent inverse relationship is not related to body mass index (BMI), a new study finds.
The results are being presented at The Endocrine Society’s 93rd Annual Meeting in Boston.
She and her co-workers studied the relationship between leptin levels and symptoms of anxiety and depression in 64 women. All subjects were asked questions to assess symptoms of depression and anxiety, with high scores indicating more symptoms. They found that higher leptin levels were linked to decreased symptoms of anxiety and depression. The current study received funding from Bioenvision in New York City and from the National Institutes of Health. Avoid severe calorie restriction. Some people will tell you to cut out carbs pretty much entirely. Fibre is great for leptin levels, mainly because it keeps you feeling full — and generally fibre-rich foods are natural and good for you in other ways, too. Fifteen of the women had anorexia nervosa, 12 were normal weight with hypothalamic amenorrhea, 20 were normal weight and in good health, and 17 were overweight or obese but still healthy.


Besides measuring leptin levels in the blood, the researchers assessed the women’s BMI, a measure of weight for height.
Again, under normal conditions leptin levels are normal and because there’s plenty of binding occurring to the receptors of the hypothalamus, the brain gets the signal loud and clear that nutrition intake is adequate. This puts the breaks on metabolism and creates a hormonal environment extremely conducive to fat storage.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could maintain high leptin levels and a body primed for fat burning while dieting? First, recall that leptin is a protein based hormone, so that rules out a leptin pill and oral administration.
High carbohydrate foods that contain simple starches (those that are made with just one or two sugar molecules) like white bread and potatoes, along with highly processed foods containing sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, all contribute to decreased leptin sensitivity. According to Byron Richards, having protein for breakfast is one step you can take to begin to restore leptin sensitivity.
Fructose is often used as a cheap sweetener in soft drinks, biscuits, and other sweet snacks that litter many a kitchen cupboard.
You can do this if you so choose, but be sure not to send your body signals that it’s starving. When you’re at a healthy weight, your hormones regularize (in a normal situation, of course).
Since leptin has a lot to do with weight control, having a diet high in these foods means you’re doing your part, taking care of your body yourself. But if the snacking bug hits and you can’t resist, aim for a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts to curb the craving. She also said there is an increased prevalence of anxiety and depression in certain conditions in which leptin levels are typically low. This finding indicates that leptin may mediate symptoms of depression and that this effect is not a function of low weight, Lawson said. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the appetite-stimulating hormones ghrelin, neuropeptide-Y, and anandamide all hop on board to make your life even more miserable. In order to do this, though, we’d somehow have to keep leptin levels high as we attempt to lose those extra pounds. With a few tweaks to your diet and lifestyle, it is possible to up the levels in your system (provided everything’s in working order).
When there is too much leptin in the bloodstream, leptin sensitivity decreases because the excess appears to block the effective flow of leptin to the brain.

If your leptin channels are not functioning correctly, eating foods to increase leptin sensitivity may help to restore the way leptin signals your brain to shut off your appetite and begin burning fuel. The result is that you will eat less and metabolize foods more efficiently, which could result in weight loss.
