Captain Tinkham’s is operated by The Jonesport Wood Company which also has stores in Liberty and Hulls Cove, Maine. I have such fun turning tool handles that I picked up 16 files that are in need of some good wooden grips.
As you can see, Captain Tinkham’s is is another great spot for woodworkers and tool collectors.
The Liberty Tool Company is the most famous branch of the Jonesport Wood company, which specializes in the sale of old tools, antiques, antiquarian books, paintings, and prints.
The Hulls Cove Tool Barn in Hulls Cove, Maine: Open Wednesday through Sunday, 9 AM to 5 PM.
We are always buying woodworking, machinist, mechanic, and blacksmithing tools such as steel planes, chisels, gouges, spoke shaves, draw knives, bar clamps, calipers, hammers, ratchets, bench vises, anvils, tongs, wooden toolboxes, etc. This day in 1961, Kenneth Eldredge was granted Patent #3,000,000 for his design of a system that could be incorporated into tools used for converting signals to numbers which would later be implemented in all kinds of devices, from utility meters to recorders. The Liberty Tool Company in Liberty, Maine is now on extended summer hours, open seven days a week, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM! Chris is a contributing editor to Popular Woodworking Magazine and the publisher at Lost Art Press.
Just a thought, as tools with family history are hard to come by and it is better to make it them work than have your own decorator set.
They were waiting for Skip Brack, the owner of the shop, Liberty Tool Co., to unload the most recent haul of tools he’d picked up in towns across New England and brought to Maine to clean, refurbish and sell. Brack, 69, had hardly opened the doors of his van before the group descended on the boxes of tools, picking through hammers, saws, axes, planes, drill bits and chisels.
Brack said he would keep the tool shop that he runs in Bar Harbor and continue to operate the Davistown Museum, a space across the street from Liberty Tool where he displays his most prized discoveries, along with work by Maine artists. Handmade tools that were used for woodworking had their golden age in the late 18th and into the 19th century, Brack said.

Brack has written 13 books, not only on the history of tools, but also about art, the history of Maine and radioactivity, another subject he is immersed in deeply.
The tool shop’s first iteration was a store in West Jonesport that Brack opened in 1970 after moving to Maine from California, his website states. To some tool aficionados, Brack is doing an important service by saving these tools, many of which are handmade and no longer built, explained Tanya Washburn, a jeweler. Brack took a seat in a wide wicker chair on the shop’s front porch with a quart-sized cup of coffee. Combined they have thousands of old tools including hand planes, precision machinist tools and usable artifacts. I hear that the store in Liberty is much larger with a lot more tools, plus they have power tools too!
There aren’t too many stores like this around, but I do recall one in Los Angeles that has a similarly large collection. Our primary mission is the search for and recovery of usable woodworking tools for reuse as well as for the collections of the Davistown Museum. If you have tools to sell, please call: 1-888-207-4005 and leave your name, number, and what you have to sell. Klein of Jersey City, NJ, was granted the patent for a spring-loaded wrench socket with a screwdriver inside, an invaluable combination tool for telephone companies. I spent a couple hours at the Hulls Cove Tool Barn in Maine with Joshua Klein, a woodworker and furniture restorer. If you want to buy every saw, plane and chisel you need to get started in woodworking, a visit to the Tool Barn will get you set up. I visited both locations (as well as Lee Neison) last time I was in Maine and can attest to the sheer amount of tools they have.

They come early to get first dibs before the newest finds get mixed in with the thousands of other tools that line the shelves and fill labeled jars and drawers throughout the store.
He explained that he works 70 to 75 hours a week, driving up to 1,200 miles in a week to find tools, clean them at his barn in Bar Harbor, set prices and manage the stores. Those are the tools that built a nation,” he said, gesturing toward axes and hammers displayed in his museum.
He goes where he hears their are tools for sale, which often brings him to properties that are being divided up because of divorce or a family death. Although the main component of the store is devoted to books, antiques and collectibles the tool annex has a great selection of old tools and hardware. For almost 35 years, they have purchased tool collections and estate lots and cleaned out cellars and attics in the New England area. The store was inundated with requests for woodworking tools, so Brack focused his business and eventually it grew large enough to move to the location in Liberty. Anyhow, these old tools are generally a great value and much higher quality than new tools made today.
And there are about 150 saws to choose from, 200 planes, 1,000 auger bits, 20 braces, a dozen eggbeater drills and thousands of other bits of metal in tool shapes. Great place, friendly helpers, lots of tools and tool bits to help you restore your own tools (found a nice adjustment knob for my #6 Stanley.
A little TLC will get many back to like-new running order – even if they never become collector showpieces, they can still be fantastic usable tools. Skip Brack is also the founder and curator of the Davistown Museum, a tool museum with a primary mission of recovery, display, and interpretation of hand tools used in Maine and New England’s maritime culture.
