Part bunk bed, part play house and if made and finished with the right materials this awesome piece of furniture could be both indoor and outdoor compatible (water seal and all that jazz). Showcase: Built From These PlansI am so honored each and every time one of you fine friends builds from these very plans! Before beginning to build, always check in on my site to make sure you have the most up to date set of plans, I occasionally update and change the plans to make the building process easier or to allow for less expensive purchasing of materials! For the Back Wall, cut the pieces for the Posts, Side Top, Side Rail, Side Bottom, and Side Short Studs.
For the Front Wall, cut the pieces for the Posts, Side Top, Side Bottom, Rungs, and Side Long Studs. For the Head Wall, cut the pieces for the End Rail, End Bed Rail, End Bottom, and End Stud. For the Foot Wall, cut the pieces for the End Rail, End Bed Rail, End Bottom, and End Stud. When the wall is attached to the Bed Frame, the cut-outs should line up just above a 2x4 for extra support.
I had followed the plans for the low lofted bed and went to the local big box store and got everything I needed. All in all, I had about $150 in this project including the materials for the top AND bottom bunk. I just made it slightly higher than the original plans called for and put a bottom bunk on it.
So it would seem that I am indeed publishing yet another set of free plans to build a super cool bunk bed today. Equal parts fun and function, this gorgeous bed will make bed time a bit more exciting for the kiddos! The Low Loft Bunk Bed Series is hands down our most popular series of project plans to date.

Cut all 4 Legs to size and then notch out the sections shown in the image on one of the legs.
Attach the Upper Head Rails on the side opposite where you choose to put the ladder, in my example this would be the left side.
With that, go forth, have fun, take lots of pictures and share them in a showcase or on social media with the hashtag #builtTDCtuff and we will share our faves! Read through the entire set of instructions and all comments before beginning this project.
The Front Wall will be cut in two sections – an Upper and a Lower section since plywood comes in a 48” width. For these interior cuts, start at the inside corner of the cut-out and drill a hole slightly larger than the blade of the jigsaw.
They share a bedroom and my wife and I were looking for a design to make a lofted bed for our 4 year old. I think that makes it certifiable that I have a complete and utter case of bunk bed syndrome and an ever lasting love for all of that built in functionality slash fort making potential that comes along with.
Attach a Cleat to the bottom edge of a Rail using 2” Wood Screws (the bottom of the Rail and Cleat should be flush with each other).
Measurements listed below are PRE-BEVEL dimensions and the actual end measurements will change once cut according to specific steps.
Drill pocket holes in the ends of the pieces (avoid drilling pocket screws in the Ridge notch area).
If a plan has images that are too hard to read, please let me know and I will reupload the images for easier reference.
This will be 2 - 2x4's, one long and the other cut into sections with spacing and dimensions as shown in the image. You can choose to secure with 3" Wood Screws from the legs into the ends of the rungs, but this is optional and you can absolutely secure with glue and call it a day!

If you print out or save plans, be sure to check in on my site to be sure you have the most up to date set of plans, as I occasionally update things for ease of building or buying.
Make sure that the pocket holes drilled into the Side Bottom are within the area that will make contact with the Posts. You can also play around with installing puck or rope lighting… the possibilities are truly endless with this Bunk Bed! I am the oldest of all my siblings, and I have several, but the two who lived with me growing up didn't arrive on the scene until I was eight and then ten years old. This will hold your ladder rungs later so just be sure that the separation between your shorter ladder supports will actually fit a 2x4 nice and snug.
If you are new to building, read through the GETTING STARTED section and other articles found under the BUILD tab in the menu on my site, it has valuable information about how to get started, tools and techniques. This step should be done a total of 4 times – twice for the top bed and twice for the bottom bed. If you are unfamiliar with the finishing process, visit my Finishing school for some tips and tricks for painting like a pro and for special finishing practices. Attach the Front Upper Side Rails to the Leg using 3" screws and attach to the Guard Rail Leg Unit using 2" Screws. We are working on rolling out all of the other hundreds of project requests, so if you are hoping for something specific, stay tuned or feel free to post it in our community forum so I can keep track of what I am supposed to be working on! This step should be done a total of 4 times – twice for the top bed (front and back) and twice for the bottom bed (front and back). If you are unsure about whether you are building safely, run a quick online search for the tool or technique you are using, or contact me via email or post to the forum before you move ahead.
