In the mid-1860s a carpenter in Sussex, England named Ephraim Colman had a brilliant idea, to make a chair with an adjustable back. In the early 1900s, Gustav Stickley began producing his versions of Morris chairs, and I maintain that he perfected the form.
On July 15, 1900 Gustav Stickley exhibited his line of "New Furniture" at the Grand Rapids, MI tradeshow.

Today while I was writing up condition reports on our Syracuse University loan that just returned (side note: go SU!), I noticed an old Stickley brand that was put right into one of the walls here in the former L. The Stickley Museum will have special hours this night and will be open to the public after this event.

Gustav Stickley's historic home on Columbus Ave in Syracuse, NY may be turned into a museum. Barbara is part of the Stickley Story- it was her record-breaking purchase of a Gustav Stickley sideboard in 1988 that made Stickley Mission again a household word after over sixty years, so it is only fitting that we have a part of her collection on display!

The Handcraft decal.Like Gustav, the brothers placed their shopmarks in locations that could easily be found, but would not detract from the design of the furniture. The 1912-1918 shopmark.For reasons that remain unclear, Leopold and John changed their shopmark radically in 1912, replacing the red clamp and the name Handcraft with a decal that literally spelled out the difference between their mark and that of Gustav's. The idea was sketched by Warrington Taylor, and adapted by Phillip Webb for a chair to be produced by William Morris and Company. Stickley was an admirer of Morris, and the first issue of Stickley’s magazine The Craftsman was an homage to Morris. The exhibition is multimedia and features works in digital format as well as painting, woodwork, and fiber work.
Born on March 9, 1858, Gustav would become one of the most important tastemakers of his day. This walking gallery tour of the exhibition will include a discussion on the impact of the Stickleys on American design and home life, as well as the aesthetics and craftsmanship that make Mission furniture so unique.

Stickley factory in Fayetteville, NY.In 1902, with their brother's encouragement, Leopold and John formed their own furniture company in nearby Fayetteville. The shopmark not only identified Gustav Stickley's furniture, but it served as a guarantee of their workmanship to the public. Decals were often placed on rear chair stretchers (rungs), inside a top drawer, on the back, or inside a bookcase. Chairs have had a slow evolution, and the best chairs are important symbols as well as places to sit and relax. The idea was there, but the execution was far too frilly and fancy; way too delicate to serve as the resting place for a king in his castle. Gustav Stickley manufactured several variations, the best known being the bow arm, the flat arm and the bent arm. Shown is a Three Legged Chalet Table from The Stickley Museum collection made by Gustav Stickley under the United Crafts label. Louise Stickley had noted that Leopold had kept one of these chairs for use at the factory as it was a personal favorite.

Think of a cross between a throne and a Barcalounger and the image of a good Morris chair should appear. Stickley factory, now the location of The Stickley Museum, employees often noted the first snowfall of the season by writing it on the factory wall. While undocumented, the combination of also using a red woodworker's tool and the Stickley family name may well have annoyed Gustav Stickley, who occasionally complained of unnamed firms infringing on his name, shopmark and reputation. All are clearly and permanently marked with a new Stickley decal and brand that should eliminate any confusion over their origin. One important difference between Gustav and his imitators is that the derivative chairs took visual clues, but made the chairs in a form that was easier to manufacture.
