Abstract:
The cadastral mapping product covers approximately 576 square miles and was compiled at scales of 1:1200 and 1:2400. The accuracy standard used is National Map Accuracy for 1""=100' and 1""=200'. The maps were derived from a variety of source documents including certified survey maps, deed descriptions, subdivision maps, and condominium plats. The source materials were of several different scales and date from the early 1900's to the present. The maps provide a useful representation of the geometry and topology of tax parcels and are suitable for the intended purpose (graphical representation). The tax parcel maps are not meant to be used for the determination of land ownership, or to be in any way a substitute for the land ownership and descriptions found in individual deeds.
Purpose:
The tax parcel maps are intended to be used as one of the base layers for overlaying with other digital layers such as contours, orthophotos, and planimetric features. The tax parcel maps are intended to be used for thematic mapping, and graphical representation for analysis.
Supplemental Information:
The 1:2400 scale areas currently mapped in Waukesha County consist of the entire U.S. Public Land Survey Townships of 8 North-Range 18 East, 7 North-Range 18 East, 6 North-Range 18 East, 5 North-Range 18 East, 8 North-Range 19 East, 7 North-Range 19 East, 6 North-Range 19 East, 5 North-Range 19 East, and 7 North-Range 20 East. Additional 1:2400 mapped areas include Township 7 North-Range 17 East, Sections 1, 12, 13, and 19-36; and Township 8 North-Range 17 East, Sections 1-6, 9-16, and 24, covering the entirety of the Village of Dousman, a portion of the Village of Oconomowoc Lake and the Towns of Oconomowoc, Ottawa, and Summit. Note that the City of Waukesha data is maintained by the City and covers all of sections 3-5, 9-10 and portions of sections 1,2,8,11-17,20-22 and 29 in Township 6 North-Range 19 East and all of sections 28,29, and 31-34, and portions of sections 20-22, 26-27, 30, 35-36 in Township 7 North-Range 19 East, and portions of sections 30 and 31 in Township 7 North-Range 20 East. This data is available from the City of Waukesha. The 1:1200 scale areas currently mapped in Waukesha County consist of the entire U.S. Public Land Survey Townships of 8 North-Range 20 East, 6 North-Range 20 East, 5 North-Range 20 East. Additional 1:1200 mapped areas include Township 7 North-Range 17 East, Sections 2-11, and 14-18; and Township 8 North-Range 17 East, Sections 7-8, 17-23, and 25-36,covering the entirety of the City of Oconomowoc and the Village of Lac La Belle, and a portion of the Village of Oconomowoc Lake and the Towns of Oconomowoc and Summit.

Process Description:
There were two methods used to digitize the cadastral features in Waukesha County. Most of the eastern half of the county was completed by board digitizing either quarter section, or section-based mylars. These mylars were constructed using USPLSS monuments and quarter section and section lines, as well as various planimetric features, (pavement, structures and water features) as a base. Each section was then manually drafted using Subdivision Plats, Certified Survey Maps, Condominium Plats, Deeds of Record, and the County Tax Roll. The mylars were then registered and board digitized. COGO entry using distance and bearing was used for most of the western half of the county. Both methods were quality controlled by generating a series of seven color check plots. The features were checked for positional accuracy, as well as for adherence to the County's level/layering specification. (See ""Waukesha County Digital Cadastral Specifications"")

Entity and Attribute Overview:
The linking attribute for the parcel area polygon coverage consists of a TaxKey attribute. The numbers consist of either an 11 or 14 digit alpha-numeric number where; characters 1 through 4 are alpha and comprise the municipal code, characters 5 through 8 are numeric and serve as quarter section identification numbers, characters 9 through 11 are numeric and represent the parcel id, and characters 12 through 14 are numeric and are used for splits. For use in the GIS/Mapping System, condominium parcels and parcels which are jointly owned differ from the conventional numbering system. These numbers are assigned a unique 11 digit number where; characters 1 through 4 are alpha and comprise the municipal code, characters 5 through 8 are assigned a 9999 code as a flag for joint ownership, and characters 9 through 11 are numeric and represent the unique jointly owned parcel id. Much of the original data compilation was done using Genamap GIS software on Unix workstations. The data was then translated to the Intergraph Microstation/MGE GIS platform. In Q1 of 2004 the data was translated to an ESRI SDE Geodatabase.
