Looking Back on Five Years as Supe |

Gilday ’85: First 3-Star Tapped as CNO since 1970 |
When SECNAV Richard Spencer nominated VADM Mike Gilday ’85, USN, to replace ADM John Richardson ’82, USN, as Chief of Naval Operations, he singled out the first 3-star for the role since Richard Nixon recalled VADM Elmo “Bud” Zumwalt Jr. ’43, USN, from Vietnam in 1970. Gilday, previously Commander, U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet, got the nod after ADM Bill Moran ’81, USN, announced his retirement. |

Nominations for the 2020 U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Award Medal will be accepted through 21 October. Established in 1998, the program honors graduates who have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to service, personal character and distinguished contributions to our nation. USNA Econ Professors Research Academy Impact |
Naval Academy Economics Professor Michael Insler and Professor Emeritus Roger Little are conducting research designed to expand knowledge of the history and impact of the Academy experience on graduates from 1971 to 2016. Preliminary results are striking: 83 percent said USNA made their lives better or much better; 86 percent said the Academy fulfills its mission well or very well in training midshipmen: morally (86 percent), mentally (95 percent), physically (95 percent) and “for leadership” (90 percent). Were you a Philmont Ranger? |
Navy—along with Air Force and West Point—has sent 30 or more midshipmen each summer to work at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico since 1988. The Philmont Staff Association (PSA) wants to reconnect with Ranger alumni for treks, hikes and more on the ranch, but is missing many of the Navy Rangers’ information in the staff database. The Unknown Soldier Centennial Preparations |
On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month in 2021 Americans will pause to recognize those who have sacrificed and those who will sacrifice in the future in the defense of America’s freedom and democracy. Among the many projects The Society of the Honor Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Centennial Committee has underway, with assistance from Naval Academy midshipmen, is the research and preservation of historical documents, photographs and items surrounding the transportation of the Unknown Soldiers by Navy and Coast Guard vessels. |

Robinson ’02: Leadership Development for Women |
“When you attend a place like the Naval Academy, you’re taught the importance of honor, courage, commitment, giving it your best shot every time, being people of integrity, looking out for others and telling the truth,” says Natasha Sistrunk Robinson ’02. Now she and six fellow alumni are paying it forward with Leadership LINKS, a non-profit offering leadership education for middle- and high-school girls focused on impactful living, spiritual and character development. |
