A diverse mix of Black music traditions from Emancipations through the 1930's
Following Emancipation, a diverse mix of Black music traditions flourished in all parts of San Antonio and Bexar County. These spiritual and secular forms of cultural performance evolved in relation to histories of slavery, diaspora, acculturation, enculturation, and the segregated mediums of public consumption in the city. Through persistence and adaptation, local Black musicians laid the foundation for a thriving jazz and blues scene and the mainstream acceptance of Black music by the 1930s.
