EMMA KELLY talks us through the BBC Show that has become the saviour to baking – The Great British Bake-Off.
Looking through the supermarkets, it seems the only customer they have in mind is the workaholic wanting nothing more than to throw a congealed, suspicious mess into the microwave and eat whatever it contains simply for sustenance. Over the past few years, the nation has started shunning these ready meals, and even shunning pre-packed bread in order to make their own. GBBO, presented by comediennes Mel and Sue, started off quietly on BBC Two in 2010 with respectable viewing figures of between 2 and 3 million. However, nobody could have thought that the nation’s love affair with home baking was strong enough to catapult contestants to national fame.
If you are interested in becoming the next Mary Berry, help is at hand with a multitude of cake-making and decorating courses. With the GBBO brand spreading and inspiring spin-off master-classes and kids versions, the home-baking trend looks set to keep rising (with or without the help of a raising agent).
There’s lots of tense standing around in the tent as the contestants watch their tarts in the oven nervously. It’s the moment of truth, and Norman fares surprisingly well, though his pastry is uncooked.
Luis is next, and his pastry is too thick which has let the bake down, followed by Nancy, whose pies look good but are dry. You are viewing this website with an old browser please update to a newer version of Internet Explorer here.

Well, we propose the BBC have a re-think, because this show is FAR from as twee as we all thought.
Ready meals and pre-packed produce are advertised as the only way that the nation of go-getters can get a meal. The premise of the show was simple – amateur bakers are given a series of tricky challenges, which will test both their own recipes and their baking knowledge. Take series three, the year of the heartthrob – James Morton, the 21-year-old medical student in the knitted sweater vest, received two page spreads in The Sun discussing his huge female fan base, while the king of bread-making, Paul Hollywood, has risen in the silver-fox stakes. Well, it turns out that home baking is a recurring trend in Britain, with cake-making emerging as a popular hobby during times of recession. As well as GBBO making baking cool and accessible, events like the Jubilee inspired families to get back in the kitchen to create patriotic cupcakes and Battenbergs. Sweet Revenge (reviewed here), situated in Market Place, Kingston upon Thames, offers master-classes in basic cake-making, how to decorate your own yummy cupcakes, and making the latest trend: cake pops (cake on a stick, how would you say no?). Norman is sticking to a safe Tarte au Citron, though Paul cautions him that it needs to be perfect in every way. Richard drinks some of his leftover custard from the jug – I like a man who treats the bake off tent like his own kitchen! Nancy does really well with her passion fruit tart, while Chetna gets some constructive criticism. None of the contestants are quite sure of the order to do things in… tensions run high as they start to run out of time!
Interesting that they’ve both done poorly on this challenge after being frontrunners for some long.

The book contains the best of the baker’s recipes from the new series as well as delicious recipes from Mary and Paul.
Sara Lee must be seeing a dip in sales, because many homes are back to making their own Black Forests and meringues.
At the end of each show, one contestant is named ‘Star baker of the week’ by judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry, and one is eliminated. With the younger contestants and the funnier quips came massive viewing figures – the finale of the third series drew in a massive 6.7 million baking addicts. Last decade, the market research group Mintel noted a 25% increase of home baking products between 2001 and 2006, with the baking sector growing by 13% in the last two years of the noughties. The cult of the celebrity chef has also been a factor with cookbooks from Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson consistently hovering in the bestseller lists. Martha isn’t confident about making pastry, (not like some older people!) and Nancy is making a chocolate pastry – mmm!
Martha’s tart also gets stuck and Nancy helps her out to unstick it – yay for comraderie in the tent! His pie tower topples over causing me to gasp dramatically, ironically Luis reacts less than I do! Part of this boom in baking can be accredited to a little BBC show called The Great British Bake-Off (GBBO). The judges love Luis’s tart, and the camera pans over to Martha shedding a few tears after her first (very mildly) poor review.
