When it comes time to find professional roofers to work on your home or business, you want to make sure they are familiar with specifically what it is you need done to YOUR roof. There are many different kinds of roofs as well as roofing materials, and not all roofers have all the skill sets to handle all the different variations. For example, just hiring a handyman might not be enough if your roof has has asphalt shingles and a chimney (or chimneys) that need special flashing around them.

Here in the Tucson area, are they comfortable working with, around and/or installing rain gutters? Can they hands roof tiles, or a rubber roofing material on a flat roof? What about wood shingles and dealing with felt paper? Some handymen will offer to do siding as well as roofing, which adds a whole other set of variables to consider.

The best way to know you’re getting someone who can truly do what you’re asking them is probably to check with the Better Business Bureau and see what kind of reputation they have established there.

Perhaps this may be obvious, but you really never know, and this has to do with the weather outlook when you’re getting close to start. Yes, there is the possibility that the forecast will be off the mark, but the point is to be safe. If you know that you will applying any sealant such as RTV, then of course you want to avoid wet conditions. Things can get complicated or expanded if you discover the underlying roof has moisture damage. There are some materials that you cannot let go and perhaps get soaked during a rain, but these are the things you have to learn. There are reasons for roofing experts because this is not general knowledge and information people seek out for fun reading. Hopefully you have some options such as being willing and able to fix it yourself, or, you can afford to hire a roof contractor to take care of the damage. You should at least read up on this topic so you can go into this with more knowledge. There really is not much to know about shingles even though there are many different kinds, and you can even pick out the ones you want. When you cut out the middle man, the contractor, from materials purchasing, then you will undoubtedly save money.

Before you get too far along, take some time and lay everything out on paper for what is needed, tools, etc. For example, you may have to create a hole in your roof so you can replace damaged wood framework. This may be necessary if the extent of damage includes the A-frame which is the roof underlying structure. What you also want to avoid doing it leaving the roof open to the elements overnight, so just get a plastic tarp so you can cover it. Preparing too much is fine, but the opposite can ruin your day and the work you did.

Avoid overlooking the important things that help you determine if a contractor is a good one. It’s true that you have to learn how to ask the right questions and then gauge how they are answered. And yes, this is very much about the issue of trust, and it’s hard to have that when you are just talking to them for the first time. So there is more to this little back story about contractors, and you should learn about it.
