Tinnitus is a medical condition characterized by persistent ringing in one or both ears which can only be heard by the affected individual. Tinnitus is most often a symptom of an underlying health condition, like a head or neck injury, ear infections, impacted earwax, or even side effects from certain medications or exposure to excessive noise.
Due to the personal and unique nature of each Tinnitus condition, proper evaluation and specialized treatment is necessary.
In many cases, the distressing combination of Tinnitus and hearing loss can be relieved with AGX hearing technology. Before any treatment begins, a specially trained audiologist will meet with you to evaluate your tinnitus and hearing. This phase helps relieve symptoms so that you can begin to experience control over your tinnitus while continuing treatment. The goal of Stage 2 is to help the brain develop those neural connections that allow it to filter out tinnitus sounds.
After a successful treatment program, your Neuromonics audiologist will work with you to develop a maintenance program you can use to continue to control your tinnitus on your own.
Clinical Professor of Audiology Deborah Culbertson, left, speaks with Liz Croskery about a white noise device that helps people suffering with tinnitus. The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the College of Allied Health Sciences at East Carolina University established the Progressive Tinnitus Management (PTM) Clinic in January to evaluate and treat tinnitus and help those suffering from it learn to live with the symptoms.

The approach was developed through the Department of Veteran Affairs and offers means for appropriate referrals, audiological and tinnitus evaluation, and group education.
At the clinic, the department’s audiology team of faculty and doctoral students diagnose the condition and create treatment plans for patients. Sound therapy allows a person to identify and introduce different sounds that draw attention away from the steady stream of noise caused by tinnitus.
Through evaluations and screening, clinicians are helping patients decide on the best options for treatment.
Audiology faculty and doctoral students also make referrals and perform hearing and tinnitus evaluations to determine suitable management options such as hearing aids, wearable tinnitus devices, counseling or group and individual treatment.
Those interested in being evaluated at the Progressive Tinnitus Management Clinic should call the clinic office at (252) 744-6104 to request an appointment. Tinnitus is also a common side effect of hearing loss, with measurable hearing loss reported in over 80% of tinnitus sufferers. The Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment is convenient and non-invasive, making it easy to use during regular daily activities.
Throughout the treatment process, education and support are provided by a Neuromonics-trained clinician. The constant perception of “ringing ears” when there is no external sound is something those diagnosed with tinnitus deal with on a daily basis.

Clinicians aim to reduce the negative emotional response and attention directed toward the tinnitus.
While an exact cause of tinnitus is unknown, sound therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy are used to reduce the annoyance of its symptoms. Because there is an emotional component with severe tinnitus distress we wanted to make sure that we had a mental health professional on our team,” said Deborah Culbertson, clinical professor of audiology.
One of those options is the “Living with Tinnitus” group, offered Tuesday nights in March and April.
Over time, these new connections help the brain to filter out tinnitus disturbance, providing long-term relief from symptoms.
The American Tinnitus Association estimates that over 50 million Americans suffer from Tinnitus.
