At least a dozen companies sell a wide variety of light therapy products -- visors, alarm clocks, floor lamps, big light boxes -- even though the Food and Drug Administration has not approved their use to treat seasonal affective disorder. A good starting point for picking a product is to look for the unit of light intensity, or LUX. And, unlike the other boxes, which require at least 30 minutes of exposure, the Litebook -- which has a targeted wavelength of light that mimics the sun's peak wavelength -- can be used for half that time, says company CEO Larry Pederson. Light therapy usually isn't an item that insurance companies uniformly cover, but it's worth checking with your provider; sometimes providing documentation of a SAD diagnosis from a physician is all you need. Light therapy is not about sitting in a room illuminated with regular or fluorescent bulbs. A couple of years ago, Sherwin stopped using a big light box and switched to a newer product the size of a compact disc holder. Today, Sherwin eats breakfast and reads the newspaper while her Litebook sits off to the side, providing her light therapy for 30 minutes every morning.

Specialized lights are recommended for therapy to be effective, and prices can approach $200 or more.

It is important to not wake up extra early in order to get a strong dose of light, as that can upset your daily body rhythm. They can help determine whether you are suffering from seasonal affective disorder and evaluate your eyes to make sure that light exposure will be safe for you. Some research suggests that blue light is more effective at reducing SAD symptoms; however, the retina is much more sensitive to blue light than it is to white light and could be damaged if directly exposed. The difference is that the product is much more compact than traditional light therapy boxes.
Different models of dawn simulators are available, but the best ones use full-spectrum light so that they are the closest to natural sunlight.
It's important to recognize when the symptoms of SAD start and to see your doctor for a prescription before they escalate.
Also, when you're indoors, keep your blinds open to let as much natural light in as you can. Keeping a regular schedule will also expose you to light at consistent and predictable times. Simply putting brighter bulbs into existing light fixtures is likely to be a waste of money. People can differ in symptoms, vulnerabilities, and other contributing medical conditions which need to be considered in devising a specific treatment plan. If you notice symptoms like weight gain, daytime sleepiness, increased irritability and anxiety, and social withdrawal in yourself or a loved one, it may be time to seek treatment for SAD. Exercise also will help offset the weight gain that is common with seasonal affective disorder. Since I don’t have lights, myself, only a menorah, and since my kids were born, I would take them around and show them the most amazing displays. In addition, electrical safety and wavelengths of the lights are important technical concerns affecting safety that many users are not equipped to evaluate.
