International tinnitus seminar 2012, tinnitus otosclerosis treatment - How to DIY

The British Tinnitus Association (BTA) is a world leader, with a trained team of friendly and experienced advisers for anyone who experiences tinnitus or those simply seeking guidance or information about the condition. Rosie Kentish writes: The XI International Tinnitus Seminar (ITS) was held in Berlin, and it was hot. The second two days were devoted to Co-morbidity and Clinical Management, with topics ranging from the conventional hearing aids and cochlear implants, to the more unconventional – medicinal leech therapy in patients with tinnitus. Hearing aids are often a first line of treatment for people with tinnitus, yet there is a lack of high quality evidence to guide clinical practice and support their efficacy.
A similar study was presented from the Netherlands of 40 participants with symmetric mild hearing loss and tinnitus who were fitted with open hearing aids. Another study on the association between workrelated stress and tinnitus distress was presented by Dr Wallhouser from Heidelberg University.
I felt quite delighted to be able to stand up in front of an international audience and state what I’ve known for some time, supported by the small amount of evidence I gained from the study.
One of the highlights of the talks was that given on cognition in tinnitus by Laurence McKenna. It was apparent that the UK is a leader in the field of tinnitus care and that the British Tinnitus Association has been a driving force in making this happen. Eddy Temple-Morris, British Tinnitus Association (BTA) Ambassador, DJ, Producer, Presenter launched an exciting new tinnitus awareness raising project.
A new tinnitus book entitled Zumbido was launched at the Brazilian ENT Meeting at Recife, November 14-17. During the Sixth International Conference on Tinnitus, held in Bruges, Belgium, in June, TRI Executive Committee Members Dirk De Ridder and Berthold Langguth told ATA how they first became interested in tinnitus and how research and the perspective on tinnitus have developped since then. With almost 300 participants from more than 26 countries the 6th International TRI Conference on Tinnitus in 2012 in Bruges was the best attended TRI meeting ever. More than 130 presentations indicated the impressive in increase in quality and quantity of tinnitus research worldwide ( Abstract Book).
We are looking forward to meeting you in May next year at the 7th International TRI Conference in Valencia, Spain. Jos Eggermont and Larry Roberts took this opportunity to launch a topic on neuroscience of tinnitus. Tinnitus is often associated with acoustic trauma and head injuries that are prevalent with blast-related injuries and is the number one service-connected disability for veterans.

A new study at the University of Michigan Health System, which was co-sponsored by the Tinnitus Research Initiative, has shown in an animal experiment, that somatosensory neurons maintain a high level of activity following exposure to loud noise, even after hearing itself returns to normal.
These results mark an important step toward potential relief for people who are suffering from tinnitus, pointed out principal investigator Susan E.
The distinguished professorship recognizes and honors individuals who have achieved national or international prominence in their fields. Jenny Marder reports about the neuroscientist Josef Rauschecker and his novel theory on the origins of tinnitus.
A very promising new approach for the treatment of tinnitus, which had been first presented at the TRI conference in Dallas, has been published in the recent volume of "Nature".Navzer Engineer, Michael Kilgard and their collegues were able to demonstrate reversal of tinnitus related neuroplastic changes in the auditory cortex of rats by combining specific auditory stimulation with vagus nerve stimulation. Richard Salvi (University at Buffalo), Chairman of the Scientific Committee of TRI and Organizer of the International TRI Tinnitus Conference 2011, talked about "Remodeling Sensory and Motor Circuits in the Brain: New Insights from Hearing Loss and Tinnitus". He presented background and described recent studies of the remarkable neuroplastic reorganization in the auditory cortex in response to hearing loss, touching on how studies of tinnitus and hearing loss provide a window into the organization and operation of the nervous system. We want to thank all of the participants for their active and constructive participation in the 4th International Tinnitus Conference. Tinnitus, the most common auditory disorder, affects about 40 million people in the United States alone. In November 2009 the France Acouphenes held their first congress, sponsored by the Tinnitus Research Initiative, at the Ministry of Health in Paris. Presentations kept the academics in the audience on the edge of their seats, and it was encouraging to see their blending of ideas and enthusiasm for identifying the causes of hearing loss and tinnitus.
At six weeks and six months follow-up, positive benefits were found in the reduction of tinnitus distress in nine of the forty candidates. She has written extensively on the emotional and psychological development of deaf and hearing impaired children, and on the management of children with tinnitus. It was hugely encouraging to find an eager audience and likeminded individuals who are dedicated to providing the very best care for those who are affected by tinnitus. Stress has always been recognised as a component in tinnitus, but the lectures by Canlon (Sweden) and Mazurek (Berlin) were highly illuminating. His aim is to raise awareness of the condition, how it can affect anyone and he wants to reflect this by putting together a compilation album where every single person involved has tinnitus.

The Program Coordinating Office is currently working with a distinguished expert panel of six international tinnitus experts to synthesize findings regarding the neurobiological basis of tinnitus, its association with PTSD and TBI, and current approaches to diagnosis and treatment. The presentations during the conference demonstrated in an impressive way the impressive progress in the understanding of tinnitus made in the last years through neuroscientific research. Rauschecker and his team published a study in the journal "Neuron", that showed that patients with tinnitus were more likely to have structural changes in the brain's prefrontal cortex and hyperactivity in the nucleus accumbens, a region of neurons deep in the brain, known to play a role in pleasure, addiction, aggression and fear. Although several approaches for the alleviation of tinnitus exist, there is as of yet no cure. Tinnitus distress, loudness, psychosocial work conditions, mental health and life satisfaction were all evaluated, and results revealed a significant association between job insecurity, tinnitus related distress, and tinnitus loudness, mental health, education and gender.
The project has had some incredible support and will be a downloadable album with tracks donated from artists with tinnitus. A better understanding of tinnitus has prompted new therapeutic options which have shown first promise in pilot studies. The present article proposes a testable model for tinnitus that is grounded in recent findings from human imaging and focuses on brain areas in cortex, thalamus, and ventral striatum. Only nineteen of the participants continued to use their hearing aids to the six week follow-up, but of those, 90% showed a significant improvement in tinnitus distress, as measured by the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI). It seems therefore that for some tinnitus patients with mild hearing loss, hearing aids can play a useful part in reducing tinnitus distress, but more research is needed to determine who will benefit from hearing aid fitting. Results of her study demonstrated a relationship between symptoms of long term stress and increased prevalence of hearing loss and tinnitus.
Hopefully, this model will guide ongoing research on the circuit mechanisms of tinnitus and provide potential avenues for effective treatment.
Dr Canton suggested that emotional exhaustion is a better predictor of tinnitus than traditional risk factors such as noise at work, gender, and hearing. Participants also completed a range of traditional tinnitus questionnaires and a statistically significant correlation was found between PRISM results and corresponding grading on the traditional tinnitus questionnaires. As a measure of distress, PRISM loses the detail of information provided by questionnaires, but the authors of the study suggest that it can provide a reliable measure of overall tinnitus suffering in just a few minutes.
