How to stop inner ear ringing, tinnitus after brain surgery - How to DIY

That ringing in the ears (also called tinnitus) that you get after hearing loud music is often due to damage caused to the microscopic endings of nerves in your inner ear.
When you are caring for someone who is ill, elderly, or disabled, it's important to consider how you'll handle those times when you can't be with your loved one in person. Some people don't have a health care power of attorney or living will because they don't realize how important these documents are. Constant noise in the head -- such as ringing in the ears -- rarely indicates a serious health problem, but it sure can be annoying.
Sound waves travel through the ear canal to the middle and inner ear, where hair cells in part of the cochlea help transform sound waves into electrical signals that then travel to the brain's auditory cortex via the auditory nerve.
Tinnitus can arise anywhere along the auditory pathway, from the outer ear through the middle and inner ear to the brain's auditory cortex, where it's thought to be encoded (in a sense, imprinted). If you're often exposed to loud noises at work or at home, it's important to reduce the risk of hearing loss (or further hearing loss) by using protectors such as earplugs or earmuff-like or custom-fitted devices. For some people ear ringing comes in the form of ringing, but others experience buzzing or any other form of periodic noise. Four parts compose the auditory system: the outer ear, the middle ear, the inner ear, and the brain. Accumulation of earwax, allergies (that affect the nose), aneurysms, foreign objects, high blood pressure, and many other medical conditions may also cause ear ringing. Tinnitus may signify underlying nerve damage or an issue with your circulatory system.[1] Although the most helpful routine to stop ringing in your ears is prevention, there are steps that you can take to treat the ringing buzz even after the damage is done. If you're coming home from a concert or a club, and your ears won't stop ringing, it's because you've damaged some of the little hairs in your cochlea, which causes inflammation and stimulation of nerves. Ringing in the ears that is caused by exposure to loud noises usually goes away after a few hours.
If you take several medications, talk with your doctor about possible side-effects that could be causing the ringing in your ears.

Several different noise-suppression tactics are used by doctors to mask the sound of ringing in your ears. White noise machines that produce "background" sounds, such as rain falling or wind whooshing, may help drown out the ringing in your ears.
Masking devices are fitted over ears and produce a continuous wave of white noise to mask the chronic ringing.
Although medications probably won't completely rid you of the ringing, taking medications can make the ringing sound less noticeable if effective. Taking ginkgo extract three times a day (with meals) may help increase blood flow to the head and neck, reducing the ringing caused by blood pressure.[3] Try taking ginkgo for two months before evaluating the effectiveness of the treatment. Water and chlorine can get stuck in your inner ear while swimming, causing or intensifying your tinnitus.
For many, it's a ringing sound, while for others, it's whistling, buzzing, chirping, hissing, humming, roaring, or even shrieking.
Things that cause hearing loss (and tinnitus) include loud noise, medications that damage the nerves in the ear (ototoxic drugs), impacted earwax, middle ear problems (such as infections and vascular tumors), and aging. Pulsatile tinnitus calls for a thorough evaluation by an otolaryngologist (commonly called an ear, nose, and throat specialist, or ENT) or neurotologist, especially if the noise is frequent or constant.
Other treatments that have been studied for tinnitus include transcutaneous electrical stimulation of parts of the inner ear by way of electrodes placed on the skin or acupuncture needles, and stimulation of the brain using a powerful magnetic field (a technique called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, or rTMS). The outer ear captures the sound, the middle ear amplifies it, the inner ear converts it into electrical impulses and the brain interprets it. For example, among many other causes, ear ringing may be caused by a bug in the outer ear, an infection in the middle ear, damage to the inner ear, or a looping circuit in the brain. Loud noises damage the cells in your ear responsible for translating sound into electricity (located in the inner ear). If you have an ear infection the ringing will be something new and in addition you may have pain, deafness and even a liquid coming out of your ear.

Some drugs may cause ear ringing (particularly anti-inflammatory and anti-depressant drugs). For other causes you may try many ear ringing treatments and remedies before you discover one that works - for me it took several years, and that is not uncommon. Protecting yourself from loud noise will not only allow your ears to heal and thus reverse ear ringing, but it will also prevent further damage, ear loss, and aggravation of ear ringing. Not only will you get a lot of vitamins and minerals that have been linked to improvements in ear ringing, but the best ear ringing supplements will control inflamation and this will make your ear cells heal faster. Your brain interprets this inflammation as constant ringing or buzzing, and this trick can help make that annoying sound go away. Tinnitus can also be a symptom of Mnire's disease, a disorder of the balance mechanism in the inner ear.
Usually, the cells will be slowly repaired (like with ear ringing after concerts) but if the exposure is repeated over a long period of time the cells never fully recover and become permanently damaged. If the ringing began after you started taking one of these drugs talk with your physician about switching it, because may be all you need to stop ear ringing. The main components of TRT are individual counseling (to explain the auditory system, how tinnitus develops, and how TRT can help) and sound therapy. I tried several others that did made my ringing less of a problem, but Tinnitus Control was the only that completely stopped it. A device is inserted in the ear to generate low-level noise and environmental sounds that match the pitch, volume, and quality of the patient's tinnitus. Patients learn how to alter these processes and reduce the body's stress response by changing their thoughts and feelings.
