While all these symptoms may occur in a number of different medical conditions, the presence of a large number of these symptoms strongly suggests that you are experiencing a degree of adrenal fatigue. When the adrenal glands are functioning normally they secrete tiny, yet precise amounts of hormones that enable you to function normally and respond healthily to the numerous stressors that one is exposed to on a daily basis.
The adrenals are designed to respond rapidly to any changes that may occur within your body or in your external, physical environment (this includes any physical, biochemical, emotional, hormonal and psychological or energetic changes). There are many factors contributing to adrenal gland dysfunction including prolonged illness or stress, financial stress, loss of a loved one, poor diet, infections, poor sleep, marital stress, toxin exposure, psychological stress, poor lifestyle choices and others. Adrenal fatigue occurs when the amount of stress the body is exposed to overextends the capacity of the adrenals to respond to, and compensate for. Symptoms of adrenal fatigue are variable but some of the common presenting symptoms include persistent unexplained fatigue, difficulty getting up in the morning, feeling unrefreshed after a good night’s sleep, fuzzy thinking, impaired memory, muscle or joint pain, tiring easily after minor exertion, mild depression, salt cravings, hypoglycaemia, a decreased capacity to handle stress, increasing irritability, a loss of enjoyment in usual activities, getting sick or experiencing more frequent infections (and taking longer to recover), low libido, feeling extremely tired between 2-4pm in the afternoon, et al.
So those experiencing adrenal fatigue have an impaired capacity to function in both their personal and work lives.
In order to diagnose or exclude adrenal fatigue, it is essential to exclude all other significant causes of persistent fatigue; while also performing tests of adrenal function. An Australian study shows 42% of patients presenting to their family doctor complain of fatigue. Simple tests of adrenal function are available in Australia and include a full hormone assessment, tests for adrenal, liver, renal and thyroid function, as well as testing for leaky gut, emotional and psychological status and any nutritional deficiencies. Treatment involves correcting the deficiencies that directly result from impaired adrenal function as well as correcting any end organ damage or hormone imbalances that arose from it.
Recovery is rapid with patients reporting marked improvement in 2 weeks and an almost full recovery within 3 months. In my high school biology class, we gave the adrenal glands as much attention as the spleen. Adrenal fatigue is currently a chic diagnosis in the world of alternative medicine, although most doctors do not recognize this health issue. The adrenal medulla, the inner part, secretes adrenaline and noradrenaline, hormones that respond to stressors.
Adrenal fatigue results when dietary and lifestyle choices cause the adrenal glands to exhaust after firing over and over. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors didn’t fatigue his adrenal glands because they only needed a burst of stress hormones during the occasional flight-or-fight situation. Another type of chronic stress that contributes to adrenal fatigue is blood sugar problems.
The problem is that the adrenals aren’t meant to be drawn on for daily blood sugar regulation. The symptoms of adrenal fatigue are non-specific, meaning they can relate to other health issues.
Three important factors work together to address adrenal fatigue: diet, supplements, and lifestyle. My struggle with adrenal fatigue began during a year of intense emotional trauma followed by the development of an autoimmune disease. In this post, I’ve attempted to explain adrenal fatigue in plain English and give you a quick-start guide for adrenal fatigue recovery.

After reading countless resources on adrenal fatigue and recovery, this is the first time I have seen the spleen mentioned. I gain if i look at starchy food(which im worried is something i contributed to myself by avoiding it so severly) and live my life with my diet under constant scrutiny. With adrenal fatigue extreme exercise, such as you mentioned, only further depletes your body and prevents healing. Lastly, taking supplements at the care and guidance of a holistic doctor is one of the best things you can do to get your health back on track. I enjoyed reading your blog I believe I have adrenal fatigue for years I have been a victim of abuse then I had to endure the pain the pain of taking care of my deceased family.
It’s hard to determine, because I still have other lingering health issues that share similar symptoms.
I am not a doctor, but I have recommended friends have theirs checked when some symptoms could be and one of them was grateful as she had it. You hear the expression thrown around a lot if you’re in the health and fitness community or reading books, blogs and listening to podcasts on health-related topics. I have a close relationship with the condition of adrenal fatigue as I have suffered from it, at varying levels, over the last four years. Working out smarter, not harder is often the way to achieve performance and aesthetic goals. Sleep is the cornerstone of being able to eat well, train well and to allow the body to re-set stress levels and lose body fat. Two, triangular shaped glands that sit on top of your kidneys, consisting of an inner medulla and an outer cortex. The system of communication between the neuro-endocrine glands that dictates our responses to stress as well as our circadian rhythm.

The gland that regulates circadian rhythm, our bodies’ roughly 24-hour cycle in biochemical, physiological, and behavioral processes. The single biggest contributing factor to adrenal fatigue (or an altered adrenal profile, as I like to call it) is stress. Contributors to the stress that leads to adrenal fatigue can be lifestyle stressors including but not limited to: lack of sleep, poor food choices, use of stimulants, pulling “all-nighters” or “pushing through” a day despite being tired, perfectionism, staying in no-win situations for too long, over training, lack of fun or stress-relieving practices. If a person has completed an Adrenal Salivary Index (sometimes called and Adrenal Stress Index or ASI) test and there is output of cortisol over the course of the day that is not simply low at each measured time, then the adrenals are capable of producing cortisol, they are just “off” in how they are releasing it in response to the messages they receive from the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis (HPA Axis). The way we can bring our adrenal health back in line is to balance out the types of messages our Hypothalamus is sending to our adrenal glands via the HPA Axis.
Vitamin C – Citrus, strawberries, kiwi, cruciferous vegetables and green leafy vegetables are good food sources.
Contact a naturopath, chiropractor, certified nutrition consultant or other practitioner in your area to find out if they can run an adrenal salivary index test for you. Pregnenolone & DHEA are very standard as a protocol for a clinician to use, and perfectly safe and effective. The hormones secreted by the adrenals influence every major physiological process within the body including protein, fat, carbohydrate metabolism, blood sugar regulation, immune competence, inflammation control, hormone regulation and healthy cardiovascular and gastrointestinal function. Prolonged stress in these areas can overwhelm the adrenal glands capacity to respond effectively and results in decreased output of the essential adrenal hormones. They have significantly compromised quality of life and the complications arising directly from the diminished adrenal hormone production has many health consequences. Because fatigue is such a common complaint and occurs in so many other conditions, an adrenal cause may be overlooked. Correcting any biochemical and hormonal abnormalities, individual tailored prescription of nutritional supplements along with diet and lifestyle changes enable persons with documented impaired adrenal function to return to full health. Then adopting an adrenal recovery diet and lifestyle is a key step in reaching your optimal health.
The outer part of the adrenal gland, the adrenal cortex, secretes the corticosteroid hormones including cortisol that monitor the body’s metabolism, inflammation, and blood pressure.
When the adrenal medulla fires, it increases the heart rate, boosts blood flow to the muscles, and creates a surge of glucose (blood sugar) in the bloodstream. When we eat imbalanced meals, high in carbs and low in fat, it causes first hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and then hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). All you have to do is spit in some vials, stick them in the freezer, and mail them to a lab. This eliminates grains, legumes, refined sugar and vegetable oils – all foods that stress the adrenals and increase inflammation.
In Your Personal Paleo Code, expert Chris Kresser advocates a very high protein breakfast for adrenal fatigue. Glandular treatment, the ingestion of small amounts of animal glands, is a traditional treatment practiced by ancient healers from across the globe.
It provides true vitamin A, an essential nutrient for adrenal fatigue recovery and hormone balance in general. This is very important, because intense exercise wreaks havoc on exhausted adrenals by spiking cortisol.
I recommend this simple technique, called Lunaception, to every woman, but especially those who struggle with hormone imbalances including adrenal fatigue.
Although I’ve made a world of progress, I continually learn and experiment with gusto.
When doctors told me that surgery and medication were the only answers to my chronic health issues, I decided to find different answers and experienced first-hand the healing power of food.
Though it only seems to be widely accepted in Chinese medicine, the spleen clears out infection and virus. I have been diagnosed with adrenal fatigue, insulin resistance, hypothyroidism and hypoglycemia.
Lauren’s blog advice is really great, but a holistic doctor is a personal health coach who can help address you individual circumstances and needs. Of course, I can’t prove which came first, but Lyme is a constant attack on the immune system, so the adrenals will suffer from it. But I would consider my adrenal fatigue 85-90% better, and that is with a starting point of very severe adrenal fatigue.
This post explains how to address the roots of stress management and hormone health, so it provides wellness support from the root of the issue. While training for my first half-marathon here in San Francisco in July of 2007, I was experiencing what seemed to be very mysterious changes in my energy and moods. Stress can be physical, mental or emotional strain or tension and can be an occurrence (chronic or acute) or a causative factor in a state of dis-ease.
We might experience acute bouts of an imbalance, but we’d quickly come back to a homeostasis and appropriate cortisol levels and rhythm throughout the day (high in the morning, tapering off to low in the evening). It sounds simple enough, but the reality is that stress comes in so many varieties and forms that it’s impossible to avoid all together. Those who are: students, medical professionals, single parents, unhappily married, unhappy or unsatisfied at work, are self-employed or starting a new business, abuse drugs or alcohol, have alternating shift schedules or who are the “all work and no play” types have lifestyles that lead to adrenal fatigue.

Depending on your status, if you are going to lift weights, keep it moderate weight and low reps- not high intensity over long periods of time. Magnesium is “essential to the production of the enzymes and the energy necessary for the adrenal cascade. I am a DC and do lots of lay lectures and once people get a grasp of the stress response, how it affects them and what sets it off, they begin to make changes and notice the results.
I enjoy a cup of my (home-brewed) coffee in the morning, and I only use a tablespoon of grounds.
The purpose of the adrenal glands is to enable your body to deal with stress from all sources (internal and external). We memorized the roles of the liver, the route of urine through the kidneys, and the complete lifecycle of the human egg. Fortunately, with some straight-forward dietary and lifestyle changes, you will be on your path to adrenal fatigue recovery. This depletes the adrenal glands and compromises their ability to perform their tasks, like the controlled secretion of corticosteroid hormones.
In response to the dangerous blood sugar crash, the adrenal glands kick in with stress hormones to mobilize glucose and raise blood sugar.
Diet and supplements certainly improve adrenal fatigue, but you must make the lifestyle changes. While it is possible, but difficult, to address adrenal fatigue on a vegetarian diet, it is impossible to reach optimal adrenal health on a vegan diet. Your body is unable to properly monitor salt and glucose levels in your blood, so you must provide those factors frequently. This stresses a healthy persons metabolism but chronically compromises the metabolism of someone with adrenal fatigue.
Strictly limit nuts and seeds, because the fatty acid profile and anti-nutrients impair thyroid function and digestion.
I am not disagreeing with their experience, but I had severe adrenal fatigue and dedicated myself to healing through diet and lifestyle, without the need for expensive and potentially harmful supplements. This medication undoubtedly saved my life, but it utterly disrupted my already compromised adrenal function. I am totally convinced that I have severe adrenal gland fatigue, and that I have had it for a long time. My doctor diagnosed me with adrenal fatigue a month or so ago, and while it was good to have some clarity for my issues, it’s been really tough being tired, not sleeping, hardly digesting, etc. It was like the air in my tires was gone and I couldn’t even muster up the gusto to finish the classes anymore. What we must do is identify the forms that we can best control in our lives and work on making diet and lifestyle modifications to work on lowering the stress-load on our systems. Furthermore, life events that can lead to adrenal fatigue include: unrelieved pressure or stress at work, any crisis or severe emotional trauma, death of a loved one, major surgery, extended or chronic illness, sudden change in life situations such as loss of a job or moving without much friend or family support in a new location and repeated or extended chemical exposure.
He has me on pregnenolone and DHEA to support the adrenals, and eventually get me back to where I need to be on my own. This one concept is one the most important things that anyone needs to know about how their body works so they can get and stay healthy for a lifetime.
When adrenal function is compromised, alterations occur at the biochemical and cellular level within the body and one experiences changes in protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism, impaired fluid and electrolyte balance, disordered function of many distant organs and deranged hormone production.
This leads to chronic fatigue, an impaired immune system, inflammation, and the other symptoms of adrenal fatigue. Avoid all plant oils, including canola oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, grapeseed oil, and hemp oil. At one point, my adrenal fatigue was so severe that I nearly fell over each time I stood up, due to the dizziness.
The Gaia supplement contains tulsi, which may have a contraceptive effect, but only in high doses and this has only been observed in animal studies. The program included plenty of whole grains, dairy, some nut butter, very lean meats, vegetables and fruit – and would add up to as much as around 2,500 calories per day. When we are able to fall asleep at night easily, wake up in the morning easily and feeling rested and have good energy throughout the daytime, we are in good balance. The adrenals are doing what they’re asked to do by the higher order functions of our bodies, but that may not be the desired action in terms of a healthy volume and balance for our cortisol throughout the day.
Fruit juices, refined sugars and grains should be avoided because they wreck havoc on your blood sugar.
During my short stint on a low carb diet (yes, I did try it before I knew better!) my adrenal fatigue symptoms drastically intensified. So, while the condition of adrenal fatigue can come on suddenly as triggered by a traumatic or severe life event, most commonly it is experienced after a gradual, cumulative effect of multiple stressors.
After the month, depending on the severity of your adrenal fatigue, you may be able to have a more lenient bedtime but for best results, stick to a 10 bedtime.
