Meditation is a way for you to relax your mind and body so that your stresses can slip away and you can remain calm and healthy. No matter what you try to do, your mind will never ever go blank in the beginning stages of learning to meditate.
You can still slip into a meditative trance even when you focus your thoughts on one single thought. You will start your meditation sessions with your thoughts coming through your head, not being able to settle them. You now know you have a place to go, in your mind, to meditate on whatever it is that bothers you. Eventually, you will move past needing to take time away to gain this state and you will be able to do this in a crowded room, or around screaming toddlers.
Meditation is mostly about allowing your mind and body to come together to a calm, peaceful place where you rid yourself of stresses.
Yes, in the beginning, it is easier to be somewhere alone and quiet, hence why that is the recommendation. Deep meditation, the type where you are looking for answers, and to reach your inner soul, will require you to be alone most times. Even when trying for a deep meditation, your thoughts will drift for some time, until you master the control of keeping the thoughts away and only focusing on what you wish to have answered. New research by biomedical engineers at the University of Minnesota shows that people who practice yoga and meditation long-term can learn to control a computer with their minds faster and better than people with little or no yoga or meditation experience. The research is published online in TECHNOLOGY, a new scientific journal featuring cutting-edge new technologies in emerging fields of science and engineering.

The participants with yoga or meditation experience were twice as likely to complete the brain-computer interface task by the end of 30 trials and learned three times faster than their counterparts for the left-right cursor movement experiments. Professor He gained international attention in 2013 when members of his research team were able to demonstrate flying a robot with only their minds.
Professor He said he got the idea for the study more than five years ago when he began his brain-computer interface research and noticed one woman participant who was much more successful than other participants at controlling the computer with her brain.
The next step for He and his team is to study a group of participants over time who are participating in yoga or meditation for the first time to see if their performance on the brain-computer interface improves. By continuously trying to control your thoughts as your mind wanders, you will never reach meditation. Meditation is a state of tranquility which can be achieved in silence or in noisy situations. Eventually, with some practice, you can taper those thoughts down to much fewer and be able to focus on those.
You know you can calm your mind enough to get to that trance point where you can figure out the answers to your problems. The state of meditation where you are lost in a sea of tranquility and your surroundings are non-existent. It is very difficult to stay in that trance of deep meditation when you are distracted by disruptive situations and people. One group of 12 had at least one year of experience in yoga or meditation at least two times per week for one hour. In these cases, brain function remains intact, but these people have to find a way to bypass muscular control to move a wheelchair, control an artificial limb, or control other devices. However, they found that not everyone can easily learn to control a computer with their brains.

The woman had extensive experience with yoga and meditation, referred to by researchers as Mind-Body Awareness Training (MBAT). Then, you will have only one thought through your mind at a time; and focus will be on that one thought.
In this state, you are in touch with your inner self and can seek answers to all of your questions. It is in trying to control your thoughts that you keep them in the forefront of your mind not allowing them to subside. Not only that but you will be a heck of a lot more focused with a clearer mind; solutions to problems will come to you quicker and easier. The second group included 24 healthy participants who had little or no yoga or meditation experience.
And then, it happens, finally, you are able to calm your mind to the point where it is blank. A consistent and reliable EEG brain signal may depend on an undistracted mind and sustained attention. This is the point where you have reached the deep meditative state that you heard about that you thought you could never achieve.
