Fueled in large part by changes in policy and technology across the K-12 landscape, teachers’ roles are evolving – as are the classrooms in which they operate. Personalized learning aims to optimize individual instruction to support students of all ability levels. During the hiring process, administrators should consider the ability of teacher candidates to understand and appreciate the value that a personalized learning model can bring to students. As Janet Stewart notes in the paper “Personalized Learning: A Human Resource Perspective on Hiring 21st Century Educators,” traditional recruitment methods rely on the assumption that all teacher education programs produce equally effective teachers. In June of 2013, President Obama announced ConnectED, an initiative that intends to connect 99% of America’s students to the Internet through high-speed broadband and high-speed wireless within five years – marking the connection of our students to today’s digital age as a federal priority. Johnna Noll of WAWM found that many of the challenges associated with moving beyond legacy policies to implement personalized learning environments could be mitigated through enhanced communications that are both frequent and embedded in all district correspondence. Special Educators work hard to make sure that their students with special needs develop and grow during the school year.
Often, my students with learning disabilities in reading or with attention difficulties struggle to keep track of the words they are reading.
These students really appreciate being allowed to use highlighter strips or reader trackers as a strategy to keep them focused on one line at a time.Some of my students have asked to take them back to their classrooms or even home with them.
It is so important for all students, but especially those with special needs, to understand what is expected of them. One of the other special educators uses a token economy with money they can use to purchase goods from the classroom store at the end of the week. With over a thousand apps now available to help individuals with special needs it has become increasingly difficult to find and choose the right special needs app. We really follow more or less with same tools in our classrooms but reading them in an article is quite reflective.

The learning environments of today span more than just a teacher’s four walls and now transcend both digital and community spaces. Building a positive, student-focused environment is critical to helping at-risk student populations succeed because they feel that the teachers and school care about them as individuals. To align classroom goals with instructional delivery, districts must shift their expectations of current teachers and the pursuit of future teachers to reflect the priorities and values of personalized learning.
Furthermore, if there are perceptible gaps in a given teacher’s education or skills, districts assume that “professional development initiatives help teachers improve their practice in alignment with broader system goals.” However, this is not always the case, which underscores the responsibility that district employers have to hire teachers with the appropriate vision and skills. While it is clear that the student benefits of tailored, digitized teaching styles is an item of national importance, translating this concept to classroom infrastructure is no easy feat; rather, implementation often brings a number of obstacles experienced by teachers and administrators alike. Different adaptive learning programs in the market allow for the seamless integration of assessment and data, as well as curricula, that can be managed anytime or anywhere and adapted to students’ individual learning paths. While the mode and model of instructional delivery may differ, the core statute of these personalized learning environments remains constant: the needs of the student come first. Implementing district-wide personalized learning policies (and generating buy-in from your teachers, parents, and students about the validity of the learning climate that will ensue) can certainly be challenging. Going forward we want to make sure we continue to provide you with the best special needs resources. Special Education teachers encounter different challenges in their classrooms than general education teachers and therefore they need different tools. I utilize all of these sensory items in my classroom to help my students balance their sensory system and prepare for academic work. They often skip lines which greatly affects their reading accuracy and hinders their comprehension.
We practice spelling words in shaving cream, learning the formation of numbers in colored sand, or finding hidden words in a bowl of rice that we have to decode. We do 1 minute timed reading tests to determine how many words they are reading per minute. When implemented appropriately, visual supports will allow students with special needs access to the general education curriculum and will help with the inclusion process.
Children thrive off of rules and need to know that their is consistency with the rules in order to view them as fair. You can present them with the exact same task on a computer that you would in worksheet format but all of a sudden it is 10x more engaging. When a student has special needs, those emotions are magnified and the checklists are multiplied.

Technological advances have transformed the way students interact with the curriculum, while 21st century pedagogical learning approaches are flipping traditional models of instructional delivery. This connective mentality enhances the district learning climate and helps mitigate risk of drop outs and low achievement.
