Rurik Marsden OBE

Biography

Rurik Marsden is the Chargé D’Affaires ad interim and the Head of Development at the British Embassy Yangon.

Before coming to Myanmar, Rurik was Head of the Department for International Development (DFID) in Nepal. Before that he worked in DFID’s research and evidence division, as Deputy Director with responsibility for oversight of DFID research on conflict, governance, growth, education and humanitarian innovation. He is currently studying for an Executive Master in Public Policy at the LSE through a scheme organised by the UK Government Policy Profession.

Rurik has worked for DFID in Myanmar (2004 to 2008) and South Sudan (2011 to 2014) as well as at the UK delegation to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and at DFID’s headquarters. He studied at Cambridge and Sheffield universiti‎es before joining the UK Civil Service.

In 2009 Rurik was awarded an OBE for his work in Myanmar. He is married with one daughter.

Chargé d'Affaires ad Interim to Myanmar

The Chargé D’Affaires ad interim represents Her Majesty The Queen and the UK government in the country to which they are appointed, in the absence of an Ambassador. They are responsible for the direction and work of the Embassy, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.
