Susan Acland-Hood

Biography
Susan Acland-Hood was appointed Acting Permanent Secretary at the Department for Education on 1 September 2020.
Susan’s previous roles in government include:
- Chief Executive at HM Courts and Tribunals Service
- Director of Enterprise and Growth at HM Treasury
- Director of Education Funding at the Department for Education
- Policy Advisor on home affairs and justice, and then education policy at Number 10
- Head of Strategy at the Home Office
She has also held senior roles in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and in the Social Exclusion Unit.
Permanent Secretary
The Permanent Secretary is a member of the Department for Education Board and attends the Performance, Management and Audit and Risk Committees. The Permanent Secretary is:

Head of the Department, ensuring the effective day-to-day running of the department, providing strong leadership and working with the board to manage the department’s external reputation

Chief Policy Adviser to the Secretary of State and the ministerial team, supporting them to develop and achieve their priorities

Principal Accounting Officer, responsible and accountable to Parliament for the stewardship of the department’s budget, and ensuring value for money
