FOOL
FOR LOVE
“Fool
For Love” premiered in San Francisco in 1982 before moving to New
York. Its original staging, featuring Ed Harris and Kathy Baker, was directed
by author Sam Shepard and went on to win the
Obie Award for Best Off-Broadway Play. Of this original production, BackStage
noted: "Fool For Love is certainly one of the best plays
of our time. Fool For Love may very well be one of the great
plays of the late twentieth century." Shepard then adapted his script
into a screenplay for acclaimed filmmaker Robert Altman, whose 1985 film
version featured Shepard, Kim Basinger, Randy Quaid, and Harry Dean Stanton.
Now, Theatre on Consignment continues its third season with a production
of this modern classic of experimental theatre.
May
(Meridith Jones) is waiting her date
(Lonny Quattlebaum) in a run-down American
motel, when an old flame (Jason Miller)
turns up and threatens to undermine her efforts and drag her back into
the life that she was running away from. A critical and popular success,
this masterfully constructed work brings searing intensity and rare theatrical
excitement to its probing, yet sharply humorous study of love, hate and
the dying myths of the Old West. David Bailey
co-starred.
“Fool For Love”
was preceded by the short play “Red Cross”, written by Shepard
in 1966. This odd, humorous, and strangely touching story of the peculiar
relationship between a lonely man and the maid who cleans his room featured
Nathan Boren, Cherice
Henderson, and Rebekah Dryden.
The
plays were presented on February 12-15, 2004, directed by Mac
Welch. Robert Thomas was assistant director/
stage manager, with Jason Bailey as producer
and set designer. Prop and costume design was by Brenda
Wakefield; Amber Malott was sound designer.
Nathan Boren was technical director.
