FAT
PIG
Theatre
on Consignment is proud to present our 8th season opener, Neil LaBute’s
comedy-drama Fat Pig. Performances are February
12, 13, 14 & Feb. 19, 20, 21. All shows begin at 8:00 pm.
LaBute's sardonically poignant Fat Pig is a twisted look at how
our beauty-obsessed society manifests itself in individual relationships.
Tom (Brandon Muhlhausen) surprises himself when he falls for the charming,
but plus-sized Helen (Cherice Henderson). Tom is taken with Helen, but
finds himself lying to his friends about her out of embarrassment. Tom's
office buddy Carter (David Bailey), the ultimate jerk, razzes Tom about
dating a fat chick to the point of a near melt-down, while Tom's ex-girlfriend/co-worker
Jeannie (Ashely Sorensen) interprets his new love interest as a direct
attack on her own desirability.
Each character's flaws manifest themselves in attacks against those closest
to them. As Tom faces the cruel and malicious way his friends treat him
because of Helen, he is met with a choice. The question, ultimately, is
who can overcome their superficial insecurities, and whose weaknesses
will prevail.
Leslie Seaton directs, with Cherice Henderson and Rebekah Rine producing.
Set design is by David Bailey, with lighting design by Clarence Nickelson,
prop design by Rebekah Rine, and sound design by Mallory Rine. Kathleen
O’Keefe is production stage manager.
Fat Pig is for mature audiences only, with strong language and
adult themes. Tickets are $10 for regular admission, $8 for students,
seniors, and military. For reservations, call (316) 613-3385.
Performances are at the First Metropolitan Community Church, 156 S. Kansas
(1 block east & south of Douglas & Hydraulic).
Playwright Neil LaBute first rose to fame with his early plays In
the Company of Men, Bash, and The Shape of Things.
His own battle with weight inspired Fat Pig. After dropping 60
pounds on the Atkins diet, LaBute gained it all back within a year. The
constant insult-slinging from those around him forced him to look at people's
relationships to external physicality.
LaBute's recent film work has landed him awards from the Sundance Film
Festival and the New York Film Critics Circle. His screenplay adaptation
of In the Company of Men won an Independent Spirit Award. His
other films include Nurse Betty and Your Friends and Neighbors.
His latest film is the thriller Lakeview Terrace.
