OUR UNIQUE MODEL

Texas Counseling Service was founded in 2002 by a group of devoted individuals, lead by Psychologist Ronald Bernstein. We began by training caring members of the community who were able and ready to volunteer as expert counselors. Housewives, retired people, experts in other fields– a wide variety of thoughtful, concerned individuals trained and served at TSC, providing cost effective counseling to anybody who required it. Inspired by Lucy in the Peanuts comic strip, Dr. Bernstein would to establish a ‘dialogue in the streets’ stand and charge $0.50 for a brief therapy session, to draw attention to the excellent requirement for affordable talk therapy services. Today, we are a non-profit counseling center and training facility where pre-licensed counselors provide counseling under the guidance of volunteer licensed professionals. In their 2 to 4 years with us, they experience numerous specialties and diverse mental methods as they make their medical hours, build their abilities, and define their professional practices. Our design depends on volunteers. Our counselors-in-training and their licensed managers are volunteers. Much of our alumni return and volunteer routinely. Together, we supply over 40,000 hours of counseling each year, valued over $2 million. Volunteering our time and our abilities releases Texas Counseling Service to run without taking insurance coverage or government financing, decreasing administrative overhead and eliminating the constraints insurance coverage can place on care. Because we volunteer, we are free to focus all of our resources on providing the best possible care for everyone we serve. In less than 20 years we have set up counseling services in Leona and other Texas cities, and we hope we are still at the start of our journey.

The Importance of Choosing The Right Counselor For You

It’s crucial to discover a good counselor with whom you feel comfortable. After all, you may discuss uneasy topics– and even share things you’ve never told anybody before. So you wish to work with someone who you will open to – not to mention listen to. But there are numerous alternatives and options out there that selecting a counselor can feel frustrating. Browsing an online directory may yield hundreds (if not thousands) of results. How do you choose someone to work with based upon a brief bio and image? And if you are seeking aid through an online therapy platform, how do you find an excellent fit when you may be talking to a counselor mostly through a text-based chat or video chat? The following strategies can help you limit your choices and choose someone who is most likely to be an excellent match for you.

How to Choose the Right Counselor

The Importance of a Good Match
You may have received a recommendation to work with a particular counselor. Possibly a good friend said, “This counselor helped me a lot. You ought to call them and make a consultation too.” However will that particular counselor have the ability to help you also? It depends. While the counselor may have excellent abilities, their deal with you will just be effective if you feel linked to them. So the very same counselor that made a fantastic impact on your pal may not exercise well for you if you don’t feel that individual connection. Here’s why. If you do not like your counselor, or you’re concerned they may evaluate you, you aren’t most likely to share your innermost ideas and sensations or acknowledge unflattering habits. If you don’t talk about these things, you might not get to the heart of your concerns, and you may not gain the info you need to create modification. In fact, your relationship with your counselor, often referred to as the “healing alliance,” will most likely be a determining consider how practical treatment is for you.

The Therapeutic Alliance
Edward Bordin, one of the very first scientists to take a look at the result of therapeutic alliance, discovered that the alliance isn’t simply made up of a bond between the counselor and the client. It likewise relates to contract on the goals of therapy and the methods utilized to reach those goals.1. The counselor and the patient requirement to like one another. They likewise need to feel there is excellent interaction and a shared willingness to interact. The idea that the relationship in between the counselor and client is essential to good treatment has been enhanced by numerous research study studies throughout the years. In fact, when the American Psychological Association (APA) produced a task force to identify the most reliable type of treatment, they discovered that the kind of therapy mattered less than this healing relationship. Despite whether the counselor utilized “cognitive behavior modification” or “psychodynamic therapy,” patient improvement depended on how well the counselor and the patient got along. The APA published this report in 2014. It states, “The treatment relationship makes significant and constant contributions to psychotherapy result independent of the particular type of treatment. The treatment relationship accounts for why customers enhance (or fail to enhance) a minimum of as much as the particular treatment approach.” Their report was based upon multiple research studies showing that a therapeutic alliance plays an exceptionally important role at the same time.3 They concluded that clients are most likely to alter their lives when they feel supported by their counselor. So they advise that counselors continuously keep an eye on interactions with their patients and examine them in terms of how they feel the procedure is going. Counselorss are encouraged to deal with improving the relationship if there seem communication issues or issues with trust.

Consider Who You Might Work Best With
For that reason, it’s essential to discover someone that you believe you’ll work well with. Some elements you might think about are:.

  • Gender – Do you believe you ‘d feel more comfortable with a man or a woman?
  • Age – Do you want to deal with somebody older, more youthful, or around your age?
  • Religious beliefs– Does it matter to you if the counselor has a particular spiritual association?
  • You may seem like you ‘d link better with an older woman. Or possibly you think you ‘d feel most comfortable talking to a guy your age. It’s up to you to think of the type of person you picture yourself opening to.

Obviously, you may have no idea who you want to speak with. That’s OK too. You can usually simply say you don’t have a choice if you’re asked. You might have the ability to learn a bit more about the counselors you need to choose from. Bear in mind most counselors do not make much of their personal lives public. But they will frequently share a few fundamental truths in their bios, so you can attempt and find somebody you may connect to before setting up the very first visit. When you call a therapy workplace or complete an initial survey for online treatment, you’ll usually be asked a couple of concerns about your basic choices. Certain websites, such as a Christian counseling site, might ask how crucial it is to you for Biblical concepts to be introduced into your work together. Lots of online websites also ask you to supply some basic information on what you ‘d like to deal with in treatment, such as anxiety, parenting problems, or substance abuse. Then, they will give you a number of counselors to select from. You might be able to read their bios, see their photos, and learn more about their locations of competence.

Credentials
Counselorss frequently have a great deal of initials after their names, and it can be confusing to figure out what all those letters represent. While you certainly don’t need to end up being an expert on psychological health accreditations, it can be useful to comprehend a bit about what the letters mean. While it may appear a bit overwhelming at first when it concerns taking a look at all the various letters, their precise license may not matter very much to you in the end. What is very important is to ensure that the counselor you pick is a certified mental health expert which they follow standards and a code of principles. This is very important if you are trying to find treatment rather than life training. Life coaches are not needed to have a particular degree, and they do not have oversight by a governing board. Licensed counselors should meet state credentials, which might consist of the following:.

  • Passing a licensing test.
  • Passing a background check.
  • Carrying out a particular variety of supervised hour.
  • Maintaining continuing education credits.

So while you might want to know what kind of degree your counselor has, feel in one’s bones their qualifications are proof that your state has actually provided a stamp of approval that the person is proficient to provide services. What might be a lot more crucial than someone’s qualifications, however, is their location of know-how. Checking out the bio can help you understand just how much experience any specific counselor has in dealing with somebody with concerns similar to yours. And it can provide you some insight into how that individual works and what sorts of treatments they provide.

Concerns to Ask a Counselors Before You Meet.
Some counselors will provide a totally free short assessment over the phone prior to scheduling your very first visit. This can enable you to be familiar with the individual a little and ask any questions you might have. If you’re offered this opportunity, take it. While a phone call will not ensure you’ll have the ability to inform whether the counselor is an excellent match, it might help you limit your options when you’re attempting to select between several people. Research studies show a counselor’s ability to reveal warmth, genuineness, and compassion is essential to their capability to form a therapeutic alliance. So consider this your possibility to perform a quick interview with the counselor and see how you feel about their reactions.4. Throughout an assessment, you might ask some questions about how they perform treatment and how they assist individuals who are looking to reach objectives comparable to yours. You can even ask how they assist their clients get comfy with treatment.

What to Expect During Your First Appointment.
During a preliminary session, your counselor will likely describe how treatment works, supply you with information on confidentiality, and ask you to sign some types. From there you may be interviewed about the problems or signs you are experiencing and your objectives for treatment. The counselor might ask questions about your youth, your case history, your family, and any history of past psychological health treatment. This can help them gain a big picture of you. And it will help them work with you on developing goals at a future visit. Your experience during the initial treatment appointment might differ a bit, depending on whether you’re meeting online or face to face. Another aspect is whether you’re paying money or billing your insurer. For instance, if you’re satisfying in person and the counselor is going to bill the insurer, they might require to conduct a thorough assessment that helps them identify whether you fulfill the criteria for a psychological health medical diagnosis, like anxiety. This is because a lot of insurance companies only cover mental health treatment for individuals who have actually been detected with a mental disorder. On the other hand, if you’re meeting with an online counselor and want to attend to a specific issue (like dispute you’re having with a partner), the counselor might focus mostly on that subject rather than attempting to gain a broad view of your life. Keep in mind, the first visit is a great time to ask any concerns you can think of about the therapy process.

What to Do If Your Counselors Isn’t a Good Match.
Whether you recognize your counselor isn’t a great match for you throughout the very first appointment, or you begin seeming like you aren’t being supported well into your therapy process, you can always alter counselors. If you’ve been working with your counselor a while, you might want to talk about the fact that you aren’t feeling a connection. This can feel a bit uncomfortable or uncomfortable, however counselors have these conversations often. If there’s an issue that can be resolved, they may wish to resolve it with you. They might likewise help you discover someone who is much better fit to your requirements and refer you to that individual. If you do not feel comfy speaking to your counselor directly about wishing to see somebody else, you can still change counselors. If you’re seeing somebody at an agency, you can ask the receptionist or someone else in the office to transfer you to a brand-new counselor. If you’re seeing a counselor online, you can ask for to alter counselors there too. In some cases, a few clicks of a button is all it requires to move you to someone brand-new. You might be asked to offer some feedback on why you and the other counselor weren’t a great match. And you may likewise be able to provide additional input about what kind of counselor you want to work with in the future. Don’t feel bad if you alter counselors. Sometimes, for one reason or another, the counselor and the patient simply don’t click. Which’s OK. It’s crucial to ensure you deal with someone that you feel comfy with, so you can get the most out of treatment.

Finally
It’s important to discover the very best counselor for you and your needs. And while the process of discovering someone you believe you can get in touch with may appear a little overwhelming, it’s well worth the effort.
