WHY WE ARE UNIQUE

Texas Counseling Service was founded in 2002 by a group of devoted individuals, lead by Psychologist Ronald Bernstein. We started by training caring members of the neighborhood who were able and willing to offer as professional counselors. Homemakers, retired people, experts in other fields– a large range of caring, worried people trained and served at TSC, offering inexpensive counseling to anybody who required it. Influenced by Lucy in the Peanuts cartoon, Dr. Bernstein would to establish a ‘discussion in the streets’ stand and charge $0.50 for a short therapy session, to accentuate the terrific requirement for inexpensive talk treatment services. Today, we are a non-profit counseling center and training facility where pre-licensed counselors offer counseling under the guidance of volunteer certified professionals. In their 2 to 4 years with us, they experience several specialties and varied mental modalities as they make their clinical hours, develop their abilities, and define their professional practices. Our model depends upon volunteers. Our counselors-in-training and their certified supervisors are volunteers. Much of our alumni return and volunteer frequently. Together, we supply over 40,000 hours of therapy each year, valued over $2 million. Offering our time and our abilities frees Texas Counseling Service to operate without taking insurance or government funding, decreasing administrative overhead and removing the restrictions insurance coverage can place on care. Since we volunteer, we are totally free to focus all of our resources on offering the very best possible look after each person we serve. In less than 20 years we have set up counseling services in Gail and other Texas cities, and we hope we are still at the start of our journey.

So you want to work with someone who you will open up to – not to mention listen to. However there are a lot of choices and options out there that picking a counselor can feel overwhelming. Looking through an online directory site might yield hundreds (if not thousands) of results. How do you choose someone to deal with based upon a short bio and picture? And if you are seeking aid through an online therapy platform, how do you find a good fit when you may be speaking with a counselor mainly through a text-based chat or video chat? The following strategies can assist you narrow down your alternatives and select somebody who is most likely to be a great match for you.

How to Choose the Right Counselor

The Importance of a Good Match
You might have gotten a recommendation to deal with a particular counselor. Perhaps a good friend said, “This counselor helped me so much. You need to call them and make a consultation too.” But will that specific counselor be able to help you also? It depends. While the counselor may have terrific skills, their deal with you will just be effective if you feel connected to them. So the exact same counselor that made a fantastic effect on your buddy may not exercise well for you if you don’t feel that individual connection. Here’s why. If you do not like your counselor, or you’re worried they may judge you, you aren’t most likely to share your innermost thoughts and sensations or acknowledge unflattering behaviors. If you don’t talk about these things, you might not get to the heart of your problems, and you might not gain the information you need to develop modification. In fact, your relationship with your counselor, often described as the “restorative alliance,” will probably be an identifying consider how useful therapy is for you.

The Therapeutic Alliance
Edward Bordin, one of the very first scientists to examine the impact of therapeutic alliance, found that the alliance isn’t simply composed of a bond in between the counselor and the patient. It likewise relates to contract on the goals of therapy and the methods used to reach those objectives.1. The counselor and the patient need to like one another. They also require to feel there is excellent communication and a shared desire to interact. The concept that the relationship between the counselor and patient is important to great treatment has been enhanced by multiple research study studies for many years. In fact, when the American Psychological Association (APA) created a task force to identify the most effective kind of treatment, they discovered that the type of therapy mattered less than this therapeutic relationship. No matter whether the counselor used “cognitive behavior modification” or “psychodynamic therapy,” client enhancement depended upon how well the counselor and the client got along. The APA published this report in 2014. It states, “The treatment relationship makes considerable and consistent contributions to psychotherapy outcome independent of the particular type of treatment. The treatment relationship accounts for why clients enhance (or fail to improve) a minimum of as much as the particular treatment technique.” Their report was based on multiple research studies revealing that a therapeutic alliance plays an extremely important function in the process.3 They concluded that clients are more likely to change their lives when they feel supported by their counselor. So they suggest that counselors continually monitor interactions with their patients and look at them in terms of how they feel the procedure is going. Counselorss are encouraged to deal with improving the relationship if there appear to be communication problems or problems with trust.

Consider Who You Might Work Best With
Therefore, it’s essential to find someone that you think you’ll work well with. Some aspects you might think about are:.

  • Gender – Do you believe you ‘d feel more comfortable with a man or a female?
  • Age – Do you wish to work with somebody older, younger, or around your age?
  • Religion– Does it matter to you if the counselor has a particular spiritual affiliation?
  • You might feel like you ‘d connect better with an older female. Or possibly you believe you ‘d feel most comfortable speaking with a male your age. It’s up to you to consider the kind of individual you picture yourself opening up to.

Obviously, you might have no concept who you wish to speak with. That’s OKAY too. You can typically just say you do not have a choice if you’re asked. You may have the ability to find out a bit more about the counselors you have to select from. Remember most counselors do not make much of their personal lives public. But they will typically share a few standard facts in their bios, so you can attempt and discover somebody you may connect to before arranging the first consultation. When you contact a treatment office or finish an initial questionnaire for online therapy, you’ll typically be asked a couple of concerns about your basic preferences. Particular websites, such as a Christian counseling website, may ask how important it is to you for Biblical principles to be introduced into your interact. Lots of online websites also ask you to supply some fundamental information on what you ‘d like to deal with in therapy, such as stress and anxiety, parenting problems, or substance abuse. Then, they will give you several counselors to select from. You might be able to read their biographies, see their photos, and discover more about their locations of knowledge.

Credentials
Counselorss frequently have a great deal of initials after their names, and it can be confusing to find out what all those letters stand for. While you definitely do not require to end up being an expert on mental health accreditations, it can be valuable to comprehend a bit about what the letters mean. While it might appear a bit frustrating initially when it concerns looking at all the different letters, their exact license may not matter quite to you in the end. What is essential is to ensure that the counselor you pick is a certified mental health expert and that they follow standards and a code of principles. This is essential if you are searching for treatment instead of life coaching. Life coaches are not required to have a particular degree, and they don’t have oversight by a governing board. Certified counselors need to satisfy state credentials, which might consist of the following:.

  • Passing a licensing test.
  • Passing a background check.
  • Carrying out a specific number of monitored hour.
  • Keeping continuing education credits.

So while you might need to know what kind of degree your counselor has, just know their qualifications are evidence that your state has actually offered a stamp of approval that the person is qualified to supply services. What may be a lot more crucial than somebody’s credentials, however, is their location of know-how. Reading the bio can help you understand just how much experience any certain counselor has in treating somebody with problems similar to yours. And it can provide you some insight into how that person works and what sorts of treatments they provide.

Questions to Ask a Counselors Before You Meet.
Some counselors will offer a totally free quick consultation over the phone prior to scheduling your very first visit. This can permit you to get to know the person a little and ask any concerns you might have. If you’re offered this opportunity, take it. While a phone call will not ensure you’ll have the ability to inform whether the counselor is a good match, it might help you narrow down your choices when you’re attempting to pick between several individuals. Research studies show a counselor’s capability to show warmth, genuineness, and compassion is key to their ability to form a therapeutic alliance. So consider this your possibility to conduct a quick interview with the counselor and see how you feel about their responses.4. Throughout a consultation, you may ask some questions about how they conduct treatment and how they help people who are looking to reach objectives comparable to yours. You can even ask how they assist their patients get comfy with therapy.

What to Expect During Your First Appointment.
During a preliminary session, your counselor will likely explain how therapy works, provide you with info on privacy, and ask you to sign some forms. From there you might be talked to about the problems or signs you are experiencing and your objectives for treatment. The counselor might ask concerns about your youth, your case history, your family, and any history of past mental health treatment. This can help them acquire an overall view of you. And it will help them deal with you on establishing objectives at a future consultation. Your experience during the initial therapy visit might differ a bit, depending on whether you’re meeting online or in person. Another factor is whether you’re paying cash or billing your insurance provider. For example, if you’re meeting face to face and the counselor is going to bill the insurance provider, they might need to carry out a comprehensive evaluation that helps them determine whether you fulfill the requirements for a mental health diagnosis, like anxiety. This is since most insurance companies just cover mental health treatment for individuals who have actually been detected with a mental disorder. On the other hand, if you’re consulting with an online counselor and want to resolve a particular concern (like dispute you’re having with a partner), the counselor might focus mainly on that topic rather than trying to acquire a broad view of your life. Keep in mind, the first appointment is a great time to ask any questions you can think of about the treatment process.

What to Do If Your Counselors Isn’t a Good Match.
Whether you realize your counselor isn’t a great match for you during the very first consultation, or you start feeling like you aren’t being supported well into your treatment process, you can always change counselors. If you’ve been dealing with your counselor a while, you might wish to talk about the truth that you aren’t feeling a connection. This can feel a bit awkward or unpleasant, however counselors have these discussions frequently. If there’s a concern that can be addressed, they may want to resolve it with you. They might likewise help you discover somebody who is much better suited to your needs and refer you to that individual. If you do not feel comfy speaking to your counselor straight about wishing to see another person, you can still alter counselors. If you’re seeing somebody at a company, you can ask the receptionist or someone else in the office to transfer you to a new counselor. If you’re seeing a counselor online, you can request to change counselors there too. In some cases, a couple of clicks of a button is all it requires to transfer you to somebody new. You may be asked to offer some feedback on why you and the other counselor weren’t an excellent match. And you may also be able to supply extra input about what type of counselor you wish to work with in the future. Do not feel bad if you alter counselors. Sometimes, for one factor or another, the counselor and the patient just don’t click. Which’s OK. It’s essential to make sure you work with somebody that you feel comfortable with, so you can get the most out of treatment.

Finally
It’s important to discover the very best counselor for you and your needs. And while the process of discovering somebody you believe you can connect with might seem a little challenging, it’s well worth the effort.
