OUR UNIQUE MODEL

Texas Counseling Service was founded in 2002 by a group of dedicated individuals, lead by Psychologist Ronald Bernstein. We began by training caring members of the community who were able and ready to volunteer as professional counselors. Housewives, senior citizens, experts in other fields– a wide variety of thoughtful, concerned individuals trained and served at TSC, providing budget friendly counseling to anyone who required it. Motivated by Lucy in the Peanuts comic strip, Dr. Bernstein would to set up a ‘dialogue in the streets’ stand and charge $0.50 for a brief therapy session, to accentuate the fantastic requirement for economical talk therapy services. Today, we are a non-profit therapy center and training facility where pre-licensed counselors provide therapy under the guidance of volunteer licensed specialists. In their two to four years with us, they experience several specialties and diverse mental modalities as they make their clinical hours, build their skills, and define their expert practices. Our design depends upon volunteers. Our counselors-in-training and their licensed managers are volunteers. A number of our alumni return and volunteer regularly. Together, we provide over 40,000 hours of counseling each year, valued over $2 million. Offering our time and our abilities frees Texas Counseling Service to run without taking insurance or federal government funding, minimizing administrative overhead and eliminating the limitations insurance coverage can put on care. Since we volunteer, we are free to focus all of our resources on offering the best possible look after everyone we serve. In less than 20 years we have created counseling services in Canadian and other Texas cities, and we hope we are still at the the very start of our journey.

How to Choose The Right Counselor For You

It’s essential to find an excellent counselor with whom you feel comfortable. After all, you may discuss uncomfortable subjects– or perhaps share things you’ve never ever informed anybody prior to. So you wish to work with someone who you will open to – not to mention listen to. However there are so many options and options out there that selecting a counselor can feel frustrating. Browsing an online directory site might yield hundreds (if not thousands) of outcomes. How do you choose someone to deal with based on a brief bio and image? And if you are seeking help through an online therapy platform, how do you find a good fit when you may be speaking with a counselor primarily through a text-based chat or video chat? The following strategies can help you limit your choices and select somebody who is likely to be a great match for you.

How to Choose the Right Counselor

The Importance of a Good Match
You might have gotten a tip to work with a specific counselor. Perhaps a good friend stated, “This counselor assisted me a lot. You ought to call them and make a consultation too.” But will that specific counselor have the ability to help you as well? It depends. While the counselor might have great abilities, their work with you will only be effective if you feel connected to them. So the very same counselor that made a fantastic effect on your pal might not work out well for you if you don’t feel that personal connection. Here’s why. If you don’t like your counselor, or you’re concerned they might evaluate you, you aren’t likely to share your innermost ideas and sensations or acknowledge unflattering behaviors. If you do not discuss these things, you may not get to the heart of your issues, and you might not acquire the info you need to develop change. In fact, your relationship with your counselor, typically described as the “restorative alliance,” will most likely be an identifying consider how useful treatment is for you.

The Therapeutic Alliance
Edward Bordin, among the first researchers to examine the result of therapeutic alliance, found that the alliance isn’t simply made up of a bond between the counselor and the patient. It also pertains to agreement on the objectives of treatment and the methods used to reach those goals.1. The counselor and the client requirement to like one another. They likewise require to feel there is great communication and a mutual determination to work together. The concept that the relationship in between the counselor and patient is vital to great treatment has actually been reinforced by multiple research studies over the years. In fact, when the American Psychological Association (APA) produced a task force to figure out the most reliable kind of therapy, they discovered that the type of treatment mattered less than this restorative relationship. No matter whether the counselor used “cognitive behavior modification” or “psychodynamic therapy,” patient enhancement depended on how well the counselor and the patient got along. The APA published this report in 2014. It mentions, “The treatment relationship makes significant and consistent contributions to psychotherapy outcome independent of the specific type of treatment. The therapy relationship represent why clients improve (or fail to enhance) at least as much as the particular treatment technique.” Their report was based on multiple research study studies showing that a restorative alliance plays an extremely crucial function at the same time.3 They concluded that patients are more likely to change their lives when they feel supported by their counselor. So they advise that counselors continuously keep track of interactions with their patients and look at them in terms of how they feel the process is going. Counselorss are motivated to deal with enhancing the relationship if there appear to be communication issues or problems with trust.

Consider Who You Might Work Best With
For that reason, it’s important to find someone that you believe you’ll work well with. Some aspects you might think about are:.

  • Gender – Do you believe you ‘d feel more comfy with a guy or a female?
  • Age – Do you wish to deal with someone older, younger, or around your age?
  • Religious beliefs– Does it matter to you if the counselor has a specific religious affiliation?
  • You may seem like you ‘d link better with an older female. Or perhaps you think you ‘d feel most comfortable speaking with a male your age. It’s up to you to think about the type of individual you imagine yourself opening to.

Of course, you might have no concept who you want to speak to. That’s OKAY too. You can normally simply say you don’t have a preference if you’re asked. You may have the ability to learn a bit more about the counselors you have to select from. Remember most counselors do not make much of their individual lives public. However they will frequently share a few fundamental realities in their bios, so you can try and discover someone you might connect to prior to setting up the very first consultation. When you contact a treatment workplace or complete a preliminary survey for online therapy, you’ll typically be asked a couple of concerns about your basic choices. Certain websites, such as a Christian counseling website, might ask how crucial it is to you for Biblical principles to be introduced into your work together. Numerous online websites likewise ask you to offer some basic information on what you ‘d like to attend to in therapy, such as anxiety, parenting issues, or substance abuse. Then, they will give you a number of counselors to choose from. You might be able to read their biographies, see their photos, and discover more about their locations of competence.

Qualifications
Counselorss frequently have a great deal of initials after their names, and it can be puzzling to figure out what all those letters mean. While you certainly do not require to become a professional on psychological health accreditations, it can be helpful to understand a bit about what the letters mean. While it might seem a bit overwhelming in the beginning when it comes to looking at all the different letters, their specific license may not matter very much to you in the end. What is essential is to make certain that the counselor you choose is a certified mental health professional and that they follow guidelines and a code of principles.
