But once upon a time, those big bands were little bands, scraping their way up to rock stardom. We have a lot of exceptional talent in the Upper Midwest, and that exceptional talent released some pretty cool records in 2015. This Wausau, Wisconsin-based band embraces the best of what the 80's had to offer (attitude, theater, swagger) while avoiding the worst (f**king power ballads). I caught this "Minnesconsin"-based band at a little club earlier this year when they played the farewell show for another regional favorite, Poney.
There are even shades of prog (and a crazy sweet bass riff) in the nearly 10 minute album closer, "Clarity".
Kick ass rock isn't the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the music scene in Wisconsin's Capitol City of Madison.
Named after a doctor that helped one of the fellas overcome a sleep disorder, Haliwel is anything but sleepy. I receive somewhere between a buttload and a poopload of digital downloads and CDs from bands who want their music featured on the Nightmare.
That giant clanking sound you've been hearing for the past year are Randy Blythe's giant brass balls. These songs are even more chilling when you realize that there are men and women who would gladly cheer along as mankind slides backwards towards unimaginable cruelty towards one another. While we've spent much of this piece talking about Blythe and vocals, let's give it up for the Adler brothers, along with Morton and Campbell for laying down another round of pummeling music. Name one other band in the race to be "teh most brootalz" who would take a stylistic risk like "Overlord".
2015 was the year that Ghost finally crossed over from being "that weird band that the metal shows play" to being "that weird band that rock stations play". Drawing from retro-rock, a smidge of modern-rock, and church hymnals, Ghost creates a sound that is all theirs. Five Finger Death Punch fans will discover several other albums on this list as they dig deeper into metal. Once they "get" the latest from Cattle Decapitation, I know that they "get" everything else this genre can do too. The list of bands who could release a compelling double album filled with songs that clock in well over the short attention span 3:30 radio single length, and STILL make those songs compelling is an even shorter one. At this stage in the game, Maiden could easily release 60 different rehashes of "The Trooper" or "Run to the Hills" and fans would still buy it. There are albums that are simply collections of songs, and albums that are ALBUMS, that have "flow" between the songs.

I will be the absolute first to admit, when Deafheaven took the #1 spot in nearly every one of last year's best album countdowns, I simply didn't get it.
Part of the reason is that when it comes to metal subgenres, I have a tough time connecting with black metal. At damn near 10 minutes per song, "New Bermuda" isn't a casual listen, but it's a worthwhile listen. It's tough to follow up a perfect record, but Bring Me the Horizon gave it a very good shot. Honestly, this is the energy that I wish Bring Me the Horizon had brought to "That's the Spirit".
After handing the trophy to Jack Black doing a cover of a Dio song last year (yeah, that really happened), the Grammy nominations for 2016 are all quality acts, and thanks to this song, Sevendust is among them. Clint Lowery's guitar work is relentlessly hooky, continuing to make this fan glad that he found his way back to the band a few albums ago. 10 albums in, and Sevendust continues to be one of the most reliable bands in metal when it comes to quality music. The Black Dahlia Murder continues their streak of releasing must-buy death metal albums with "Abysmal". Our second entry in this #13 logjam comes from a band that, much like TBDM, continues to define and refine their sound. Cancer Bats may not be a household name in the traditional sense, but with quality like "Searching for Zero", they'll continue to be a name in my house. As of this writing, aside from the "X-Ray Visions" single, "Psychic Warfare" is not being streamed on YouTube or Spotify. And at the end of the year, there's nothing more list-eriffic than a "Best Whatever of 2015" list.
I was in attendance for two SOLD OUT festivals featuring them either at the top of the bill or right before the headliner. I think the feeling of this album can be summed up in the dog snarl at the beginning of "Exterminate Filth". Culture Killer started off as a side project for the gents involved, many of whom came up in Florida's hardcore scene.
Of course, you can't come from the state that birthed Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Obituary, etc. And, like one of my other favorite extreme music stalwarts, Napalm Death, Culture Killer's lyrics keep it decidedly real about what's going on in our world. The remaining members of supergroup Tau Cross are going to tax your underground knowledge a bit more.
When a metal band can strip it down to acoustic and still retain that sinister edge, that my friend, is the mark of great songwriting. The "troo kvlt metal" fans who were chugging haterade at Five Finger Death Punch's inclusion on this list are gonna tap a keg of the stuff at this entry.

Shinedown frontman Brent Smith and guitarist Zach Myers kicked off their acoustic tour in Destin, Florida by with a tribute acoustic cover of "Big Empty".
Former Velvet Revolver bandmate drummer Matt Sorum spoke with SiriusXM host Matt Pinfield about the passing. There's nothing like trying to explain clinical depression to someone who doesn't "get it" to make you feel more isolated. I remember popping "The Downward Spiral" into my cassette deck (yeah, I'm old, I know) for the first time. After it was over, I rewound the cassette (yeah, I still know I'm old) and listened again, and again, and again.
I do enjoy Cash's version too, but for for my money, the crash of noise at the end of Trent Reznor's original is a far better reflection of the noise in my head on a dark day. There a quite a few songs involving Morrissey that I could have picked for the topic at hand, but this one has always stood out to me for one stanza in particular.
If there was ever a band that summed up what was going on in my head when I was a teen, it was Suicidal Tendencies.
By this point in the story, Edgecrusher is wondering if his mission, his life is even worth the fight.
Of all the books I've read, all the songs I've heard, all the descriptions I've consumed, nothing sums up being in the depths of depression like this song does. If you're coping with depression, hopefully, at least one of these songs helped you feel less alone in your fight. If you know someone who's coping with depression, I hope these songs gave you some insight as to how they're feeling.
