MARCH 2019

Dean's Dispatch for Alumni

From the desk of Dean Boise

U.S. News and World Report released the 2020 edition of the law school rankings on March 12. The College of Law is ranked #91—in a tie with 8 other law schools—dropping from last year’s ranking of #88.

Analyzing the data behind this year’s rankings will take some time. However, to put this year’s move in perspective, over the last 16 years the College has consistently moved within a rankings band ranging from #86 to #107. Only once in those 16 years has our rank exceeded the rank we’ve achieved in each of the last four years. Before 2003, the College was ranked within tiers without a specific numerical position. For example, in 2002, we were ranked in the third tier (of four), which encompassed schools from #91 to #135.

Notwithstanding this year’s ranking, our 2018 incoming class’s 25th percentile GPA increased from 3.04 to 3.13; the 25th percentile LSAT score improved from 150 to 152; our New York State bar pass percentage was the highest ever, at 91.6%; and our employment rate for bar passage-required and JD-advantage jobs exceeded 90%.

Our mission is to provide an outstanding, forward-leaning 21st-century legal education so that our students can cultivate rewarding careers and realize their life goals. Our improvements in key indicators over the past year—in enrollment, bar passage, and employment—show that we continue to deliver on our strategy of educational excellence.

Alumni support is critical to our success in these matters, and I appreciate all you do for your alma mater.

College of Law Chosen to Host Externships 10

After a selective application process, the College of Law has been chosen to host Externships 10, a biennial conference on externships, field placements, and service learning in legal education. This preeminent conference convenes faculty members, career services leaders, and administrators from law schools across the country and Canada.

I hosted Externships 8 when I was Dean of Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, and we—along with attendees—can expect a fulfilling and edifying experience when we host Externships 10. I can also say, with pride, that the conference organizers chose Syracuse in part because of the considerable human and technological resources they saw in Dineen Hall, the reputation and experience of our externship team—professors Terry L. Turnipseed and Kim Wolf Price L’03—and the support we can draw on as part of a major University.

Online Legal Education

Syracuse Law Review to Host Symposium on Online Learning, April 26, 2019

On April 26, Syracuse Law Review will bring together legal education experts from across the country for a ground-breaking symposium exploring the impact of online education on law schools and the legal profession. The one-day symposium—“Online Learning and the Future of Legal Education”—will explore the challenges and ample opportunities presented by online learning.

The symposium comes at an important moment in legal education. Around the nation, law schools and law professors—including the College of Law—are pioneering new forms of online teaching. The symposium will result in the first Law Review issue devoted entirely to exploring these questions.

I welcome your presence at this important forum. To learn more about the Symposium and to register, visit law.syr.edu/online-learning-symposium-2019.

The College of Law hosted the 10th VALOR (Veterans’ Advocacy, Law, and Outreach) Day in Dineen Hall on March 2. Once each semester, Betty and Michael D. I welcome your attendance as faculty, staff, students, local dignitaries, and the new citizens’ families celebrate the journey toward citizenship with an unforgettable event. As I tell our students, during a naturalization ceremony the pages of legal textbooks come alive, and it is a joyous reminder of the human impact of the laws we have dedicated our lives to uphold.

As with the 2018 ceremony—which was one of the highlights of the year—our students will play an important part in the proceedings. I hope to see you there!
