College of Law Mistakenly Included in USA Today List of Poor Bar Passage Performers

Bar_Pass_Social_Media_Post

A January 24 USA Today article entitled “Law schools where too many graduates fail the bar exam may face tougher sanctions,” mistakenly included Syracuse University College of Law in a list of 18 schools that would not satisfy the ABA’s proposed new 75% bar passage standard if the standard were applied to their 2015 bar passage rates. In fact, not only did Syracuse’s bar passage rate of 82.6% for 2015 graduates clearly exceed the proposed standard, our bar pass rates for the classes of 2016 and 2017 are even stronger, surpassing 90% … Read the full statement.

Welcoming Three New Faculty Members

COL_NEW_FACULTY_FEB19

Please join me in welcoming Jennifer Breen, Doron Dorfman, and Mary Szto (pronounced SEE-toe) to our faculty. Not only do our new colleagues add considerable expertise in key strength areas of the College, they bring diverse experiences and viewpoints, and I believe our students will benefit tremendously from their inclusive approaches to legal education. They will begin their service in August 2019.

Thank you again to Robin Malloy and the other members of the Faculty Appointments and Leaves Committee—Keith Bybee, Shubha Ghosh, Laura Gouldin, Andrew Kim, Cora True-Frost, Joseph Warburton, Corri Zoli, along with 2L Justin Santabarbara—for your hard work and careful consideration in narrowing a large pool of candidates to a terrific group of new faculty members.

BBI Office Construction Begins

Plans to co-locate the Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) within the College of Law have been in the works for a very long time, and now construction of fourth floor (north wing) office space for the Institute has begun. The work will continue through the end of April, around exams and in the evening to help minimize noise and vibration.

Housing BBI’s team in Dineen Hall will foster new collaborations and innovative opportunities in disability law and policy. I am grateful to all of you who have helped with the planning effort and also to our faculty members who have moved offices in recent months to make way for the new BBI space. If you have any questions or concerns about the project, please direct them to Assistant Director of Events and Facilities Sarah Valenti at slvale01@law.syr.edu or 315.443.3257.

Law Faculty Use CUSE Grant to Promote Civics Education

In May 2018, the University awarded Kim Wolf Price and Lauryn Gouldin a Syracuse University Collaboration for Unprecedented Success and Excellence (CUSE) grant to develop the Syracuse Civics Initiative.

Kim and Lauryn continue to build and strengthen connections with courts, bar associations, school districts, and other organizations to promote civics education programming in our community. In December, Chief Judge Robert Katzmann invited them to join the Second Circuit’s project on civic engagement—Justice for All: Courts and the Community—as members of the Advisory Group of the Civic Education Committee. In February, Wolf Price and NYCEx students toured the new Justice for All Learning Center in the company of Adriana Mark L’03, the court’s Deputy Circuit Librarian.

Important Reminder: Changes to Academic Calendar & Faculty Evaluations

A reminder that due to unforeseen conflicts, we have brought forward by one week the start of the 2019-2020 academic year. This means that the 2019 1L Orientation and Convocation Week will begin on August 12; classes will start on August 19; and Orange Edge will take place from July 31 through August 10.

This calendar change means that faculty evaluations also will be brought forward, to coincide with Orientation Week. Please plan on being on campus during the week of August 12-16 to meet with me and to attend Convocation, when NYSBA President Henry (Hank) Greenberg L’86 will address our incoming J.D., JDi ,and LL.M .classes

Los_Angeles_LAW_Reception

In the Land of Orange

INSCT Director James E. Baker and I had a wonderful time on the West Coast recently, catching up with Orange alumni of both the College and the University. We attended a San Francisco reception on January 29 and a Los Angeles event on January 31. On both evenings we had ample time to deliver updates about the College and plans for INSCT, announce the expansion of our Externship Program to the West Coast, and mingle with alumni.

In addition, Assistant Dean for Advancement and External Affairs Sophie Dagenais and I had a number of good meetings in both cities with donors and prospective donors who we are cultivating in connection with our upcoming campaign.
