[music] Tom: The Basics are the Sizing up skills that help you know what's happening in any situation. Sizing up helps you avoid costly mistakes and maximizes the chances that your decisions and actions will be effective and accurate. Sizing up works because it gets you ready to take in and use information to manage and often prevent problems. There are four Basic skills that help you Size Up the situation. The first Basic skill is getting into a good Position. This means physically locating yourself in such a way that you can see and hear what's going on around you. The second Basic skill is using good Posture. You'll learn why it's important to stand erect with your head up and your shoulders back. Learning to Observe inmates, their behaviors and appearances is the third Basic skill. Attentive observation will give you very important clues about the inmates' attitudes moods and expectations. Finally, the fourth Basic skill is Listening. Listening is the ability to hear and understand what inmates are really saying by listening carefully, you'll hear warnings of potential problems and you can proactively manage these problems before they get out of hand.
